What is "retention"?

Because there is a lot of activity on Usenet, server operators must periodically delete old Usenet data to make room for new incoming data. The measure of how long data exists on a Usenet server before it is deleted is known as the server's "retention" time.

Many ISPs have low retention Usenet servers, which is undesirable because it may make it harder for you to find some messages and download complete files. Panic's Usenet Access service is a very high retention server. If you frequently have trouble finding messages or files, or the files you want are incomplete, you may wish to try Panic's Usenet Access.
