Exploring Yojimbo |
The Collections pane contains your Library collection, several Smart Collections, Tag Collections, custom Collections, and the Trash.
By default, some Smart Collections are hidden. To show or hide items in your Collections pane, choose Smart Collections from the View menu.
Tags (or keywords) are a great way to identify items for later grouping or retrieval. Once a tag has been used, Yojimbo will remember it, and offer to auto-complete is as you begin typing. Tags are most useful when used liberally, so you should feel free to apply as many tags as you like.
For example, you might be using Yojimbo to keep track of books and music that you want to purchase, or add to your gift list. It can be difficult to find these items when you need them, because the important thing was “shopping”, not what exact ISBN or CD title you were remembering. A solution to this can be tagging.
When you see mention of an upcoming book you might want, create a Yojimbo entry for it and add the tags “book” and “shopping”. Later on, your friend iChats you with a recommendation for his new favorite album. So you don’t disrupt what you’re doing, you quickly create a Yojimbo entry for it, and tag it with “music” and “shopping”.
Next time you shop at Amazon, you can instantly retrieve all the items tagged “shopping” to see a list of books and CDs you wanted. Or, before you head off to Booksmith, you can search for “books” and see the list of items you might purchase there.
While this is a simplified example, you can see how providing multiple Tags allows you to retreive an item not necessarily from its contents or name, but from why you chose to remember it.
