Defining citation styles

Selenium allows you to define custom citation styles to match any requirements. By using tokens, you can tell Selenium how to format your citations and display them in your paper.

To define a new citation style:

Step 1

Choose Window > Citation Styles.

Step 2

To add a citation style, (APA, MLA, etc) click the + button in the lower left corner of the window. Makes sure the Citation Style tab is selected in the window that appears, then enter the name of the style in the window and click the Add Item button.

Step 3

By default, Selenium adds several publication kinds to each new citation style. If you want to add additional publication styles, click the Kinds button beneath the blue source list on the left of the Citation Styles window. Then, click the + button beneath the source list, enter the publication kind in the window that appears and click the Add Item button.

Step 4

Once you have your citation styles and publication kinds added, you need to define them so that Selenium can use them to assemble your bibliography. To do so, ensure that the Styles button beneath the blue source list is selected, that the citation style you want to work with is selected in the source list, and that the publication kind whose citation style you want to define is the current item in the popup button in the toolbar.

As an example, if you wanted to define the citation style for magazines in MLA format, MLA should be selected in the source list and the popup button in the toolbar should say Magazine.

To define the citation style, type into the upper text box in the main Citation Styles window. Any text you enter (including tabs, spaces and punctuation) will be placed in the bibliography by Selenium. If you want to include variable information, such as the author's name or the title of a source, use tokens. Tokens are short pieces of text that Selenium will automatically replace with the appropriate content. To add tokens, click the button with a gear on it in the toolbar, and choose the kind of information you would like to insert a token for. You can also use basic HTML to italicize or underline a source's title, for example.

For some examples of how to use tokens and HTML formatting, look at the default MLA and APA styles provided by Selenium.

Step 3

Once you are done defining citation styles, close the Citation Styles window. You can always edit your citation styles or add more at a later time.
