Deep Space Nine suffers considerable damage, many are killed, more are wounded and vital equipment is stolen during an attack by a breakaway group of renegade Jem'Hadar. Sisko is compelled to forge an unlikely alliance with some loyal Jem'Hadar to prevent the rebels from repairing an ancient Iconian intergalactic gateway. The Quickening Answering a distress call, Bashir and Dax beam down to a planet to discover that the entire population has been doomed by the Dominion to be born with a terrible blight. They all die prematurely, some still in their childhood. Starfleet's idealistic doctor determines to create an antidote but faces some stiff resistance.
