.ltWOMEN'S PRESS CLUB The Times, 15 February 1945 OPENING BY MR. BRENDAN BRACKEN Mr. Brendan Bracken, Minister of Information, was the principal guest at the opening ceremony of the Women's Press Club of London yesterday. The club arose out of a meeting of representative woman journalists, called by Miss Phyllis Deakin (The Times) on April 1, 1943, and the membership already exceeds 300. Miss Deakin, chairman, said:- "I do not quite know whether we should all have the same difficulty in imagining what we could do without the Minister of Information in peace-time. That is no personal reference to Mr. Brendan Bracken, but rather to the office of the Ministry of Information. Mr. Brendan Bracken has stood up for our traditional freedom when it has come under fire in the House of Commons." Mr. Bracken said:- "As time goes on and our man-power is reduced it is highly desirable to have more and more woman journalists in high spheres in the newspaper industry. Women in war-time have been marvellous. They have gone everywhere, been an example of energy, enterprise, and courage, and I think higher offices should be extended to them." .lc .llImage: Through women's eyes Image: Media War and peace: Second world war .ll .lsWR03:WR03_05S WR03:WR03_03S WR08:WR08_02S .ls
