.ltIt's all yours girls, from today The Sun, 29 December 1975 WOMEN get a whole new equality deal today after centuries of discrimination. The Sex Discrimination Act and the Equal Pay Act became law at midnight. But women must stand up for their rights if they are to win in the equality stakes, Dr Shirley Summerskill warned last night. Dr Summerskill, the junior Home Office Minister who played a leading part in getting the Sex Discrimination Bill through Parliament, added: "The important thing is for women to know what their rights are and how to seek redress under the Acts. Unless women do so, the laws on their own are useless." Terrific Top nude model Vivien Neves, aged 27, described the new laws as "terrific-just great!" She said: "Women are the equal of men, and we can do anything they can do - well almost anything." Miss World contest organiser Julia Morley was not so enthusiastic. She said: "My feeling is that it is something women are going to regret." .lc .llImage: Media Women's Lib: British lib The Law: Legal status The Law: Equal Opps Commission The Law: Sex Discrimination Act The Workplace: In a man's world The Workplace: The glass ceiling .ll .lsWR03:WR03_03S WR09:WR09_03S WR01:WR01_03S WR01:WR01_05S WR01:WR01_06S WR02:WR02_04S WR02:WR02_03S .ls
