The second Square RPG for the Playstation, Saga Frontier is the 4th Romancing Saga series, which is planned to be released Spring of 1997.

The graphics team of Seiken Densetsu has also joined in the developing team, and looking at the screenshots so far, the graphics indeed show a vast improvement. And of course, the rest of the crews from the prequels are back again for another round of Saga:) Now, the entire game is in 3d polygon graphics (but more of a anime approach, unlike FFVII's) with vastly improved visual effects in the area of magics. Apon reading this, you might find that some concepts in Saga Frontier are taken from Final Fantasy Legends. Here are some details:

"The Characters" There are going to be numerous characters, as usual, in Saga Frontier. Depending on who you choose as your main character, the final objective of the game will be completely different from one another. Some other characters in the game will end up becoming your enemy too. You can acquire numbers of characters into your party, possibly more than 10, and during the battle, you can now decide which of your members to join the battle. Let me introduce you to some of the main characters in the game. Blue comes from the region called "Magic Kingdom". He is born with great magical potentials, but he can't acquire the real power of magic unless he defeats his twin brother Red. Emilia, a former supermodel, was forced to retire due to her marriage. Now she has been arrested, accused of killing her husband. To seek revenge on the killer, she plans to escape from prison. T260G is a robot discovered in the region called "Boro". To find out his purpose of existence, he starts his journey. Coon is a monster that comes from a region called "Needle Castle". In order to save the region, now roams around the world to look for his (or her?) brothers who hold the key. There are more characters such as a doctor, and a ghost of a former king, but nothing is known about them yet.

"Regions" "Regions" are individual worlds of different time eras, but they all co-exist with each other. Every "region" has very diffrent images from a modern metropolis, to an imaginary magical kingdom. Furthermore, there are "regions" inside one's dream, a jungle, underwater, and cyberspace. You can travel from one region to another using a "region ship". Here are some "regions" already revealed: "Needle Castle" is a castle that stands on top of a dark misty mountain, which gives us an impression of loneliness. Inside the castle, there is one circlular room which has 5 coffins lying in a star formation. "Colosseum" looks like those you would find in ancient Rome, but what exactly is the meaning of all this? Possibly something like FF3? "Kowloon" sounds very familiar doesn't it? This region is very much like the real Kowloon:) But, be careful, there aren't many lights around. "Boro" is a region which was a battlefield during a war a long time ago, and several windmills are all over the place, (possibly the villagers are using wind electricity). There is one wierd builiding in the middle, which seems like a secret lab. "Lute's House" is a tree house inside a forest. Not many details have been given on that yet.

"Battle Scenes" The player will encounter enemies the same way as the prequels did. Now it won't be the enemy on the left and players on the right. Depending on the landscape, the positioning of characters and enemy will differ, thus, different strategies may be needed. You will learn special attacks when a light bulb appears on the player's head, just as usual. A few magics have been revealed so far as well. All magics starts off with blue rings around the character and blue light appears after the ring. In Vermillion Sun, several huge red rubbies come from nowhere and collide into the enemy, shatterring in the end. While Crimson Flare, several light rays surround the enemy and several explosions cover up the enemy. In Recovery, a star falls off onto the character and recovers the HP. Plus, there is a thing called "succesivery magic" where you can cast several magics in one turn by one character. One succesivery magic was demonstrated casting two Vermillion Sun, two Crimson Flares and a Recovery. The player has to cast this through special commands like those of fighting games.

"Races" There are 4 races involved in the game and they are humans, bogy, monster and machine. Each race live together in several different regions. Depending on the character's race, there will be differences in weapons and armors. All races except monsters can equip weapons, armory and items. Humans during battle will learn special attacks, while magics can be used by purchasing them in shops. Bogies can use witchcrafts and can increase weapon levels through taking enemy's weapons and armory. Machines won't learn special attacks during battle, instead, they can acquire them by equipping better weapons, armors and items. Monsters absorb the abilities of the enemy defeated and combine it with themsleves, becoming a new breed of monster. They can only equip accesories.
