Pattern fase:
Being on oldskool analogue sequencer fan, I like the idea of routing control data to whatever comes to mind.You step-record a phrase, variate velocities, durations and other parameters and in no time you have a nice groove to build upon.
There are all kinds of pattern based tools to accomplish this, all with independent timing and length.
Monophonic line and chord generators are an example but also things like gates, slides and curves are available.
Lineair fase:
While the groove is running, inspiration starts to flow...The next step is to record whatever comes to mind without worrying about composition.
Here the four independent multi-track recorders are the ideal tools to accomplish this.
Push the record button and start jamming on your midi- or PC keyboard.
Everything will be recorded in clips that can be split, merged, looped and edited.
Composition fase:
When you have enough material gathered during the two above mentioned fases, it's time to think about arranging them.One way is to use the Mixer-state sequencer to build a rough composition and see what works together.
This sequencer has 16-steps comparable to song-blocks like intro/verse/chorus/bridge.
The more conventional way is to use the master multi-track where you can arrange clips and events.
Events are stuff like mutes/resets/fade-ins and outs/variations/mixer-states and so on.

The skinnable interface reflects the 3 fases mentioned above. On the left side you have the modular giving the overview of what's in use and how it's connected. The right side is a scrollable area for pattern based tools and in between you'll find the browser for drag'n'drop preset management. On the bottom is the resizable linear panel with it's clips and events. |
