IUMA INTERNET UNDERGROUND MUSIC ARCHIVE THE NET'S FIRST FREE HI-FI MUSIC ARCHIVE Band Submission Information, Version 2.3, September 29, 1994 903 Pacific Avenue, Suite 300 Santa Cruz, California 95060 (408) 426-4862, (408) I-AM-IUMA Email: info@iuma.com THANK YOU FOR YOUR INTEREST IN THE INTERNET UNDERGROUND MUSIC ARCHIVE. In October 1993, IUMA was two college students' extracurricular project. Today, IUMA has brought labels as diverse as Bedazzled, TeenBeat and Warner Bros. on-line. Not content to be merely a promotional tool for commercial labels, IUMA has put songs by more than 300 independent, unsigned artists on-line, enabling world-wide distribution of their music to an estimated 30 million people. IUMA's contents are powered by Silicon Graphics computers. Our main site is located in Santa Cruz, California, with mirrors in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and London, England, serving approximately 45,000 accesses daily to the songs, images and biographical text that comprise IUMA. IUMA's rebuilding of the music industry has been widely reported in newspapers such as the San Francisco Examiner, the Village Voice and the London Times; magazines such as Newsweek, Billboard and Details; and on television channels MTV (US and Europe), CNN and BBC TV. IUMA is leading the drive toward artist-compensated, high-fidelity, on-line music distribution. IUMA recently was awarded 1994's Best of the Web by Internet book publisher O'Reilly & Associates for "contributions that have significantly improved the Internet." IUMA is a free service on the Internet which does not require user fees or long distance phone calls. IUMA is built on the Internet's open hypertext graphic-user interface, known as the World Wide Web, which is compatible with Windows PCs, Apple Macintoshes and UNIX computers. Using a visual interface, users browse through music as they do in record stores, by band, artist or song title and additionally by release date, artists' location, music genre and record label. Listeners are encouraged to buy demo tapes and CDs, post public reviews of bands' songs and e-mail the band directly. Bands may choose to receive quarterly statistics summarizing the number of downloads (plays) of their full songs, song excerpts, photographs and biographical text. We have also begun to provide artist compensation, allowing users to place orders through IUMA for those bands who provide us with copies of their tape or CD. One recent IUMA project, in conjunction with Silicon Graphics and Moebius Technologies, enables radio stations to play songs on the air directly from IUMA, increasing distribution possibilities to include FM broadcasting. _________________________________________________________________ What to Submit to IUMA ITEMS, SPECIFICATIONS AND SUGGESTIONS Songs Choose songs recorded using the highest possible fidelity. We accept DATs, CDs, cassettes and vinyl. Our tape deck has settings for normal bias, high bias, metal cassettes and DNR B and C. Each band should include at least one full song. In the near future, IUMA will become available to radio stations and will need complete songs for airplay. Songs must be no longer than five and one-half minutes long. Long songs create larger files that are downloaded less often. If your song is longer than five and one-half minutes long, please specify a fade-in time, fade-out time or both. Due to copyright laws, songs must be original. Parodies however are "fair use" of other material. Each artist or band is required to sign a license allowing IUMA to electronically distribute their music legally. See final sheet of this packet. We encourage all artists to have their work legally copyrighted. The risk of copyright infringement over the Internet is the same as it is from the radio or cassette duplication. Images Photographs, artwork, CD covers and other images must be submitted for inclusion on the site. We recommend images with high contrast for best scanning results. Any text other than artistic text belongs in the text section. In general, we prefer images on a PC-compatible or Macintosh disk, in Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, CompuServe GIF or any common format. Please specify whether the disk is formatted for PC-compatible or Macintosh. Text Tell your potential audience everything they should know about you. Submit a bio, write out song lyrics, tell a story...express yourself. Be sure to list the musicians and their respective instruments. This is the right place to include contact information, where prospective fans can find out about shows or buy music and where major labels can send the contract. We strongly encourage text submissions on a PC or Macintosh disk with text in Microsoft Word, WordPerfect, plain ASCII text or any other common format as this saves us time in processing your band. Please specify whether the disk is PC-compatible or Macintosh. If you send a handwritten note, please write legibly. We cannot quote copyrighted materials (e.g. magazine articles) at length. Brief description of the band and each song on IUMA Text again, but this time for quick-browsing Netizens. Be as succinct as possible about what makes your band and songs unique. Here is an example of a band description for Deth Specula: "Deth Specula is a five-man, guitar-oriented, neo-retro band from Santa Cruz. The group plays both originals and covers. To quote Thomas Jefferson, ' they rule.'" See? Brief, descriptive and (silly, yet) creative. Again, one for the band and one for each song on IUMA. Personal Information & Legal License Please fill in the form attached to this packet with your address, phone number, email address and other personal information for our records, in case we need to contact you. Also, please make sure to sign the legal license enclosed. --------------------------------------------------------------------- ,--------------, | | BROOKMAN, SCOTT | Small Image | | from the | | artist/band | | | ^.____________.^ Richmond, Virginia, USA "When I Die You Can't Have My Organs" is a very funny song about a character's defiant refusal to donate his organs; they're his, after all, and he's keeping them. The song, according to Brookman, who has serious doubts about community spirit, is among the best sounding on his latest cassette, despite a speedy recording session. Donations pay not only for the digitizing and compressing of music, the scanning of images and the processing of text, but also for the hardware, software, maintenance and management of IUMA as a whole. There are also such non-negotiable costs as rent, utilities and telephone bills. We spend a minimum of an hour to process each submission, therefore, we feel these prices are reasonable for the service we provide. However, IUMA is sympathetic to starving musicians. If you honestly cannot meet these prices, please feel free to send in your music along with a donation you can afford. You will eventually be put on the site, but priority is given to those who meet the standard payments. Over the past several months IUMA has grown at a dizzying pace. Founded by Rob Lord and Jeff Patterson in October 1993, and joined a month later by third partner, Jon Luini, IUMA is now an organization of roughly ten, highly dedicated employees. If you have any questions regarding the submission information or anything else concerning IUMA and the electronic distribution of music, do not hesitate to call, write, fax or email us. We look forward to hearing your music and putting it on-line.
