The key to Cary August lies in his music - a desire to appeal to many markets; the knowledge that being "lumped" into one particular genre will do nothing more than narrow the field of public acceptance as well as the artist's own creativity. "What we're trying to do here is produce music that does not isolate anybody," states Cary.
Cary, who oversees every facet of the development of his songs - from lyrics and arrangements to production and editing - also feels that the product itself, must reflect his own attitude towards excellence. "Impact is something the record buyer can place on the shelf with pride, right next to Mariah Carey and Erasure," he states.
While he admits that he has been influenced by a variety of music spanning many eras, what he does is unique as well as contemporary. "To be effective, Techno-Pop must have an essence that pushes it beyond the Top-40, to deeper realms - listeners are ready for this," he states. "I want to see this music transformed from ritual dance music into something that is meaningful to the listener as well."
Working in the San Francisco studio, Cary's desire for perfection is apparent in everything he does. He insists that the final product reflect not only his talent for writing, but avails itself to the state-of-the-art technology available in recording today. "If I expect my listeners to take me seriously, I can give them nothing less than the best."
Great music is only part of the formula. His distinct melodies and driving rhythms may draw the listeners in, but the lyrics will keep them. "I feel that listeners can relate to my lyrics - it is my goal when writing," states Cary. "Lyrics should act as a point of reference for the listener and it is always nice for me when I hear that a fan was touched by what they heard."
So what drives Cary August? "The need to create, the need to entertain but most of all the need to touch people in a significant way - this is what keeps me going. This is what makes me feel that I'm doing something important."
Based on the success of his 1994 Wish You Were Here, Cary August is sure to make an Impact with his fans and within the music industry.
