Fiery Driven desktop color laser printer to offer fast, photographic-quality color output

SAN MATEO, Calif. - June 18, 1996 - Electronics for Imaging, Inc. (NASDAQ:EFII) today announced that it is supplying IBM with Fiery XJe Controllers for the new IBM Network Color Printer which debuts today at PC Expo in New York. The Fiery XJe Controller offers the desktop color laser printer industry's fastest document processing times as well as photographic-quality color output.

"Printing high-quality, continuous-tone color documents requires a controller with serious processing power and the ability to rapidly move lots of data-especially in a network environment," said Dan Avida, president and CEO of Electronics for Imaging. "That's why the Fiery XJe uses the same advanced technology we use in our Fiery Color Servers that drive color laser copiers."

"We turned to EFI for the controller in the IBM Network Color Printer because we wanted to offer our customers the best combination of speed and quality," said Bob Kilcullen, general manager, Distributed Printing, IBM Printing Systems Company. "Fiery technology helps make the IBM Network Color Printer an ideal solution for demanding corporate workgroup and graphics environments."

About the Fiery XJe Controller

Fiery XJe Controllers are based on the proven technology and scalable architecture developed for EFI's Fiery XJ Color Servers. The Fiery XJe employs both a 100 MHz RISC CPU and application specific integrated circuits (ASICs) to achieve the industry's fastest document processing times. These specially designed XJ RipChips speed up the output of color documents by off-loading all data movement functions from the controller's main CPU, which is then free for PostScript processing. EFI's Rip-While-Print technology further speeds printing by enabling one page to be printed while subsequent pages are processed. With Continuous Print, Fiery XJe Controllers eliminate the delay caused when printers "cycle down" in between printing different pages or jobs. This combination of hardware and software technologies drives the IBM Network Color Printer's engine at its maximum rated speed (3 pages per minute in color, 12 pages per minute in black and white).

Fiery XJe Controllers enhance not only print speed but print quality, generating 600 x 600 dots per inch (dpi), 32-bit continuous-tone output on all prints. EFI's STARR Compression technology enables the Fiery Driven IBM Network Color Printer to print continuous tone images without hardware upgrades or additional memory. An adaptive compression technology, STARR compression determines the minimum amount of compression required to print each file, ensuring the highest quality output on a file-by-file basis.

To meet the needs of demanding multi-user environments, the Fiery XJe also includes an on-board hard drive for spooling of processed documents, as well as a suite of software utilities for easy remote management of print jobs. Network support includes auto-sensing and auto-switching EtherTalk, TCP/IP and Novell IPX.
