Fiery Color Server drives E-Print at its fully-rated speed, while EFI DocBuilder software simplifies workflow

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- September 11, 1996 -- Electronics for Imaging, Inc. (NASDAQ:EFII), a pioneer and leading supplier of technologies for high-quality digital color printing, today introduced a new Fiery® Color ServerTM for the Indigo® E-Print® 1000+ Digital Offset Color® press.

Indigo will demonstrate the new Fiery Color Server with the E-Print 1000+ at Seybold San Francisco (booth #517) from September 11-13th.

The Fiery Color Server drives the E-Print 1000+ press at its fully rated speed of 2000 pages per hour with full color, 800 dpi resolution. In addition, EFI's DocBuilderTM document set printing technology -- designed to simplify the creation of complex documents on production printing engines -- allows users to take full advantage of the E-Print 1000+'s speed and output quality. "The E-Print 1000+ is a very fast engine that is capable of very high quality output," said Dan Avida, EFI's president and CEO. "Fiery Color Servers not only drive production speed engines like the E-Print at their full speed and maximum resolution, but also provide users with a number of tools to improve workflow. Our DocBuilder technologies simplify the processes of imposition and stripping, provide desktop control of finishing options, and make it simple to reprint and even re-order the output of processed files." "EFI is the technology leader in high-productivity workflow for digital color output," said Wayland Hicks, president and chief executive officer of Indigo, N.V. "Their technology, matched with the capabilities of Indigo's E-Print 1000+, gives our customers a powerful product to penetrate new markets with Indigo's unique short-run full-color digital printing."

About the E-Print 1000+ Press

The most widely used full-color digital press in the world, the Indigo E-Print 1000+ press produces high-quality, four-color output at a rated speed of 2,000 letter-sized pages per hour. The press requires no films, plates, proofing or press make-ready, and prints on a wide range of coated and uncoated papers, as well as special substrates such as pressure-sensitive labels, foils and plastic films. It prints directly from files in industry-standard formats to produce outstanding, crisp, brilliant text and graphics. Indigo's High Definition Imaging technology allows the E-Print 1000+ press to produce full-color printing with an effective 200-line screen ruling.

About the Fiery XJ+ for E-Print

The performance-engineered architecture of the Fiery XJ+ for E-Print provides outstanding document processing power. At the heart of the XJ+ for E-Print is a workstation-class MIPS R4700 central processing unit, (CPU) dedicated to Adobe PostScript Level 2 processing. EFI's XJ+ RipChipsTM -- specially-designed application specific integrated circuits (ASICs) -- off-load all data movement functions from the Color Server's CPU. The Fiery XJ+ for E-Print includes 256 MB of RAM standard, expandable to 512 MB.

Overall system throughput is enhanced by the Fiery XJ+ for E-Print's 66 MHz data bus. A Fast SCSI connector allows for rapid data movement to and from the Color Server's 2 GB internal hard disk. In addition, the Fiery XJ+ for E-Print uses secondary cache memory to increase system performance for most processor-intensive tasks.

The Fiery XJ+ for E-Print supports a number of network environments, with a built-in Ethernet interface and support for simultaneous Novell IPX, TCP/IP and EtherTalk network protocols. An ISA expansion slot allows for the use of an optional Token Ring network interface. A dedicated slot is intended to support future 100Base-T network interface cards.

An advanced suite of technologies allows the Fiery XJ+ for E-Print to achieve unmatched output speed and print quality. Rip-While-PrintTM enables one page to be printed while additional pages are processed. Continuous PrintTM eliminates the delay caused when the copier cycles down between pages or jobs. EFI's STARRTM compression, a dynamic compression technology, enables even large documents to be printed at maximum image quality. Fiery XJ+ for E-Print color management tools include ICC profiles, color separation tables and color rendering dictionaries (CRDs).

The Fiery XJ+ for E-Print includes a number of innovations to improve workflow. Fiery DocBuilder technology allows processed files to be stored in RAM for fast reprinting. DocBuilder provides complete document set printing support with powerful automated imposition tools, allowing for auto-duplexing, collation, page order and insertion of slip sheets. The Fiery XJ+ for E-Print software suite also makes it easy to print two- and four-up booklets and tri-fold brochures. With the included Fiery Command WorkStationTM -- a Pentium-based workstation -- users can display and control the output of multi-page documents in an easy-to-use icon-based environment. The Command WorkStation also allows users to run graphics and other applications directly at the server.
