SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. --- September 11, 1996 --- Electronics for Imaging, Inc. (NASDAQ:EFII), a pioneer and leading supplier of technologies for high-quality digital color printing, today introduced the Fiery® XJ+ 500 Color ServerTM for production color systems, including the Xerox DocuColor 40 Digital Color Production System. The DocuColor 40 is a 40 page per minute color copier/printer.
Both EFI and Xerox will demonstrate the new Fiery Color Server connected to a DocuColor 40 during Seybold San Francisco (EFI booth #1014, Xerox booth #2235) from September 11-13th.
"The emerging class of production-speed copiers like the DocuColor 40 make it possible to produce a whole new range of color documents," said Dan Avida, EFI's president and CEO. "Documents that were once too expensive or time consuming to print with conventional methods can be easily and effectively printed using this new high-speed digital color printing technology. The Fiery Color Server/DocuColor 40 combination represents a powerful short-run color printing solution."
"Providing solutions that closely match specific customer needs is the intent behind our strategic alliance with EFI," said Mark Hill, vice president and general manager of the Xerox Color Solutions Business Unit. In related news, Xerox today announced the immediate availability of the Fiery XJ+ 500 for its customers.
The performance-engineered architecture of the Fiery XJ+ 500 provides outstanding document processing power. At the heart of the XJ+ 500 is a workstation-class MIPS R4700 central processing unit (CPU) dedicated to Adobe PostScript Level 2 processing. EFI's XJ+ RipChipsTM --- specially-designed application specific integrated circuits (ASICs) --- off-load all data movement functions from the Color Server's CPU. The Fiery XJ+ 500 includes 256 MB of RAM standard, expandable to 512 MB.
Overall system throughput is enhanced by the Fiery XJ+ 500's 66 MHz data bus. A Fast SCSI connector allows for rapid data movement to and from the Color Server's 2 GB internal hard disk. In addition, the Fiery XJ+ 500 uses secondary cache memory to increase system performance for most processor-intensive tasks.
The Fiery XJ+ 500 supports a number of network environments, with a built-in Ethernet interface and support for simultaneous Novell IPX, TCP/IP and EtherTalk network protocols. An ISA expansion slot allows for the use of an optional Token Ring network interface. A dedicated slot is intended to support future 100Base-T network interface cards.
An advanced suite of technologies allows the Fiery XJ+ 500 to achieve unmatched output speed and print quality with the DocuColor 40. Rip-While-PrintTM enables one page to be printed while additional pages are processed. Continuous PrintTM eliminates the delay caused when the copier cycles down between pages or jobs. EFI's STARRTM compression, a dynamic compression technology, enables even large documents to be printed at maximum image quality. Fiery XJ+ 500 color management tools include ICC profiles, color separation tables and color rendering dictionaries (CRDs). The Fiery XJ+ 500 includes a number of innovations to improve workflow. Fiery DocBuilderTM technology allows processed files to be stored in RAM for fast reprinting. DocBuilder provides complete document set printing support with powerful automated imposition tools, allowing for auto-duplexing, collation, page order and insertion of slip sheets. The Fiery XJ+ 500 software suite also makes it easy to print two- and four-up booklets and tri-fold brochures. With the included Fiery Command WorkStationTM --- a Pentium-based workstation --- users can display and control the output of multi-page documents in an easy-to-use icon-based environment. The Command WorkStation also allows users to run graphics and other applications directly at the server.
While the Fiery XJ+ 500 is the first shipping Fiery Color Server for color production engines, EFI also intends to support other high-speed color output devices. EFI today announced a new Fiery Color Server for the Indigo E-Print 1000+ Digital Color Press, and will demonstrate at Seybold a Fiery Color Server connected to a prototype 31 page-per-minute Canon CLC 1000 copier/printer.
