This file contains important information regarding the patch it was included with. It is highly recommended that you read the entire document. ___________________ WHAT'S IN THIS FILE - Issue - Resolution - Installation - Additional Information ______ ISSUES 1. When running VirusScan for Windows v3.1.0 with Sound Blaster16 drivers, you may experience difficulties accessing Windows upon rebooting the system. 2. When VShield is password-protected and configured for Centralized Alerting, .ALR files are not created. __________ RESOLUTION If such difficulties are encountered, use this patch to remedy the issue. The patch resolves driver incompatibility issues responsible for this error. This patch replaces the MCFSHOOK.386 driver with one that is compatible with Sound Blaster16 drivers. This patch also replaces the VSHWIN.EXE file to resolve the issue with VShield Centralized Alerting and password protection. After running this patch on your Windows 3.1x system, these issues will be resolved and the installed version of VirusScan will be upgraded automatically to v3.1.0a. ____________ INSTALLATION **NOTE** This patch can be installed using either of the two options below. You need only select one option to install the patch; it is not necessary to use more than one option. If you choose OPTION 2, you must unload Vshield before running the SETUP.EXE file included in this patch. For information on unloading VShield, see the VirusScan User's Guide. If Vshield is not unloaded, issues may arise because a file that is in use by Windows (VShield) is being overwritten by the patch. *OPTION 1* 1. Reboot the computer to DOS 2. Copy the following Windows 3.1x VirusScan files: MCFSHOOK.386 (found in Windows 3.1x system directory) VSHWIN.EXE (found in McAfee VirusScan (default: C:\McAfee\Viruscan) directory) to a temporary working directory such as C:\TEMP. This will back up your current files. 3. Copy the following files from V31PATCH.ZIP: MCFSHOOK.386 (copy to Windows 3.1x system directory) VSHWIN.EXE (copy to McAfee VirusScan (default: C:\McAfee\Viruscan) directory). 4. The computer will need to be restarted for the changes to take effect. *OPTION 2* **NOTE** Make a backup copy of the SYSTEM.INI file before completing the steps below. 1. Edit the SYSTEM.INI file located in the Windows 3.1x directory. You can do this by editing opening the file with any text editor. 2. In the [386 Enh] section of the SYSTEM.INI file, type REM in front of the line "device=VSBPD.386." The line should resemble the following: REM device=VSBPD.386 3. Save the new changes and exit the text editor. 4. Open a Windows session and run the SETUP.EXE file included in V31PATCH.ZIP. You must restart the system for the changes to take effect. 5. When the system has restarted, edit the SYSTEM.INI file again. Remove the REM that was placed in front of "device=VSBPD.386" in your SYSTEM.INI file. 6. Save changes and exit text editor. ______________________ ADDITIONAL INFORMATION 1. This patch only supports VirusScan 3.1x v3.1.0 and is not intended for use with versions 3.0.0 and 3.0.1. 2. Upon running this patch, the VShield TSR Awareness feature will be disabled.
