Project S.P.A.C.E. (Sun, Planets, Asteroids & Comets Exploration)
Objective: Improve K-12 educator and student understanding of our solar system based on current data from NASA/JPL explorations.
Approach: Project SPACE will provide three components: 1) an interactive multimedia space exploration experience (SPACE Simulation), 2) an in-class curriculum (SPACE Curriculum); and 3) access to the NASA/JPL electronic library (SPACE Curriculum Library). The SPACE Curriculum Library will use the Internet as a vehicle to disseminate information nationwide to educators and students.
Accomplishments:
- SPACE Simulation (Mars Phase) is a computer-based interactive multimedia working model of the entire simulation product, and is in its final development stage. This model allows educators and students to plan and execute a robotic mission to Mars .
- SPACE Curriculum uses an innovative and flexible design tool (Curriculum Web) to create a model curriculum which supports current instructional pedagogy. Use of such a design promotes student interest and aids in the incorporation of space curriculum into classroom settings. Additionally the Web acts as a means to access the curriculum electronically.
- SPACE Curriculum Library is currently on-line on the Internet. The first of many curriculum products, such as lesson plans and hands-on activities are now available.
Significance:
- Project SPACE
- Provides a platform for learners to understand the relevancy of NASA/JPL data obtained from space explorations.
- Simulation
- Uses interactive technology to translate complex datasets into meaningful learning experiences.
- Curriculum
- Can be integrated into any traditional science discipline.
- Model employs current science education reform theories.
- Library
- Employs low cost dissemination vehicles to aid large numbers of learners.
- Training
- Uses a variety of instructional strategies in multiple educational settings which promote student learning and enhance problem solving skills.
