Enhanced Access for Forest Management

Objectives

Deliver multi-scale, multi-resolution spatial information useful in forest-management planning to resource managers and the public via the Internet WWW.

Approach
  • Outreach to determine needs
  • Plan strategies for meeting needs
  • Modify existing Web and GIS client-server software for data delivery via the Internet
  • Establish a Forest Management WWW GIS testbed
  • Provide workshops and training for Department of Natural Resources personnel
Accomplishments
  • Implemented Web server providing access to more than 4 gigabytes of natural resources related data.

    • ForNet ImageView: retrieval and viewing of ERDAS image files.

    • ForNet MapServer: creates custom graphics from ERDAS GIS data.

    • Implemented forest fire information system.
  • Held a major workshop and ten training and demonstration sessions.
  • ForNet publicized in 17 magazine and newspaper articles, displays at six events, and will be featured on Minnesota public television.

Significance
  • Improved community disaster response capabilities, with an emphasis on helping disadvantaged and minority groups.
Plans
  • Complete remainder of WWW site.
    Agreement expires in Fiscal Year 1997.
