═══ 1. Overview ═══ The Exec-U-Shell editor allows you to create electronic presentations by combining text with graphic backgrounds. Start the Exec-U-Shell editor by selecting Create Presentation from the main menu. Initially the editor will consist of a background graphic with a menu bar at the top of the window. At this point, you may start creating a new presentation by Adding Text to this initial screen. Or, you may use the File menu option to Open an existing presentation. Select Help Index from the Help pull-down menu for information on adding text, changing the backgrounds, adding additional screens and more. ═══ 2. Adding Text ═══ To add text to the screen, first position the mouse pointer where you want the text to be placed and then click the left mouse button. This will cause a box to appear that is the height of the current text font and one space wide. The blinking cursor indicates that you are in the text entry mode. Use the keyboard to begin typing letters. The normal editing keys such as backspace, delete, insert, home, end, and the left and right arrow keys are available to help you enter your text. When you have completed typing a line of text, click the left mouse button outside the text box, or press the return key. ═══ 3. Editing Text ═══ To edit an existing line of text, place the mouse pointer over the line and press the left mouse button. A box will appear around the selected line. Then press the left mouse button again with the pointer over the part of the line where you wish to begin editing the line. You will now get a flashing text entry pointer. Use the normal editing keys such as backspace, delete, insert, home, end, and the left and right arrow keys to change the text. Deleting Text ═══ To delete a line of text, highlight the line by placing the mouse pointer over the text and pressing the left mouse button once. There will be no flashing text entry pointer at this point. Press the Delete key on the keyboard to delete the line. ═══ 5. Navigation ═══ A presentation usually consists of multiple screens. To determine how many screens a presentation has, choose the Screen Goto... menu item. This will bring up a dialog box that contains a listbox. The listbox itself contains an entry for every screen. The current screen will be highlighted. To jump directly to any screen, select a screen from the Goto listbox. To move to the next screen, select the Screen Next menu item or press the PgDn key. To move to the previous screen, select the Screen Previous menu item or press the PgUp key. See Screen Insert..., Screen Delete..., and Screen Move... for information on these topics. ═══ 6. Moving Text ═══ To move a line of text, select the line you wish to move by positioning the pointer over the line and pressing either mouse button. A box will appear around the selected line. Position the pointer in the box and click the right mouse button. The pointer will change to a four-way arrow. At this point you are able to move the text line by dragging it to a new location. Release the right mouse button to fix the line of text in its new position. When you are satisfied with the new position click outside the box. ═══ 7. Help Menu ═══ Use the choices on the Help pull-down to display: Help index Displays the index of help menu. General Help Displays overview information about Exec-U-Shell editor. Help for keys Displays a list of key usage. Using Help Provides detailed information on the kinds of help available and how to use help. Product info Displays information about the Exec-U-Shell editor. ═══ 8. General Help ═══ Use this choice to get general help for the program. General help provides general information about the Exec-U-Shell editor. ═══ 9. Extended ═══ Use this choice to obtain information on how to use the Help facility. ═══ 9.1. Key Assigments ═══ The list of keys is arranged in groups. ACCELERATOR KEYS HELP KEYS F1 Get help Esc Previous Help Panel, or End help if only one panel Alt+F4 End help F3 Return to Exec-U-Shell menu SYSTEM KEYS Alt+Esc Switch to the next program, including full-screen programs Ctrl+Esc Switch to the Task List WINDOW KEYS Underlined letter Move among the choices on the action bar and invoke pull-down menus or execute the function chosen ═══ 10. Index ═══ Use this choice to display the help index. The help index lists the help information titles that are available. ═══ 11. Information ═══ This dialog displays information about the Exec-U-shell editor, such as version number and copyright notice. ═══ 12. File Menu ═══ Use the choices on the File pull-down to open and save presentations. ═══ 13. File New ═══ This menu item will clear the existing presentation. The default background graphics will remain. ═══ 14. File Open ═══ This menu item will display the File Open... dialog box. Use this dialog box to select an existing presentation. ═══ 15. File Add ═══ This menu item will display the File Add... dialog box. Use the dialog to append a presentation to the currently loaded presentation. ═══ 16. File Save ═══ This menu item will save the current presentation using the current file name. If a presentation is being saved for the first time, the Save As... dialog will be invoked. ═══ 17. File Save as ═══ This menu item will display the File Save as... dialog box. Use the dialog to save the current presentation under a new name. ═══ 18. File Exit ═══ This menu item will return you to the Exec-U-Shell Main Menu screen. ═══ 19. Edit Menu ═══ Use the choices on the Edit pull-down menu to change the current screen text or background. ═══ 20. Edit Background ═══ This menu item opens up a pull-down menu of graphics that represent the base background graphics. Selecting one of these base backgrounds opens up a pull-down menu of the different variations of that base background. Select the variation that is desired. The current background graphic will be changed to your new choice. ═══ 21. Edit Text ═══ This menu item will display a pull-down menu of options for modifying either a single line of text, if one is selected, or the current text settings if no text fields are selected. ═══ 22. Changing the text font ═══ New text added to a screen will appear as defined by the current font settings. To change these current font settings, first ensure that no lines of text are selected. Then bring up the font dialog box by selecting Font... from the Edit Text pull-down menu. The currently defined font will appear in the sample window of the dialog box. Change the font name to select a different type face. Change the font style to make the font bold or italicized. Press OK to accept your font selection. If you want to change the font of an existing line of text, select the line of text before selecting Font... from the Edit Text pull-down menu. The changes made will only affect the selected line of text. ═══ 23. Changing the text color ═══ New text added to a screen will appear as defined by the current font color. To change the current font color, first ensure that no lines of text are selected. Then bring up the color dialog box by selecting Color... from the Edit Text pull-down menu. There are several ways to change the color settings. You can click on any part of the Hue/Saturation circle to select a color. Then select the brightness of the color by pointing to a position on the value bar. The currently selected color will be displayed on the color patch. You may also choose your color by directly changing the Red, Green and Blue spin buttons or the Hue, Saturation, and Value spin buttons in the HSV mode. Match Mode will allow you to match an existing color. Selecting Match Mode will change your cursor to a cross-hair pointer. Position the pointer over a pixel anywhere on the desktop and click the left mouse button. The current font color will change to match the color of the pixel under the cross-hair pointer. Press OK to accept the color settings or Cancel to nullify your changes. ═══ 24. Clear Current Screen ═══ This option removes all text lines from the current screen. ═══ 25. Screen Menu ═══ Use the choices on the Screen pull-down menu to navigate between, move, insert, delete, name, and change timings of screens. ═══ 26. Move to next Screen ═══ This menu option will advance the presentation to the next screen. If the current screen is the last screen of the presentation, a new screen will be created with the same background as the current screen and you will be positioned on the new screen. ═══ 27. Move to previous Screen ═══ This menu option will back the presentation to the previous screen. If the current screen is the first screen of the presentation, then the Screen Previous menu item will be disabled and a beep will sound when the PgUp key is pressed. ═══ 28. Goto any Screen ═══ This menu item will bring up a dialog box containing a listbox of all the screen names in the current presentation. The current location within the presentation is indicated by the highlighted screen name. Choose which screen you would like to go to by either single clicking on a screen name and pressing the OK button or double clicking a screen name. If the presentation contains only one screen this menu item will be disabled. ═══ 29. Insert a Screen ═══ This menu item will bring up a dialog box containing a listbox of all the screen names in the current presentation. The current location is indicated by the highlighted screen name. Choose the position of the new screen in the presentation by selecting the screen with which you would like to insert a new screen before or select After Last Screen to insert a new screen at the end of the presentation. The current location in the presentation will not change. Use the Screen Goto menu item to change your position within the presentation. ═══ 30. Delete a Screen ═══ This menu item will bring up a dialog box containing a listbox of all the screen names in the current presentation. The current location is indicated by the highlighted screen name. Choose which screen you would like to delete by either single clicking on a screen name and pressing the OK button or double clicking a screen name. The current screen will change if the current screen is being deleted. If the presentation contains only one screen this menu item will be disabled. ═══ 31. Move a Screen ═══ This menu item will bring up a dialog box containing a listbox of all the screen names in the current presentation. The current location is indicated by the highlighted screen name. Choose which screen you would like to move by either single clicking on a screen name and pressing the OK button or double clicking a screen name. The screen chosen will be lifted from the list. At this point pressing Cancel will abort the screen move operation. Choose a new position for the screen by selecting the screen that you want to place the lifted screen before. If you wish to move the screen to the end of the presentation choose After Last Screen. If the presentation contains only one screen this menu item will be disabled. ═══ 32. Change the Screen name ═══ This menu item will bring up a dialog box containing an entry field with the current screen's name. Edit the screen name by using the normal text keys. Choose OK to accept the new name or Cancel to reject the new screen name. ═══ 33. Change the Screens timing ═══ This menu item will bring up a dialog box containing a listbox with the different timing options for a screen. The current timing setting will be highlighted. Change the setting you would like by either single clicking on the setting and pressing the OK button or double clicking the setting. The settings will affect the pace of the presentation when running the presentation from the Run Presentation menu option on the Exec-U-Shell Main Menu.
