Java Links

This page of Java links was put together by David Medinets and all opinions and mistakes are his. Clay and Que are including this page on the CD purely for your convenience.

Now lest you think that I can't design a decent web page, let me hasten to assure you that I can. This page is simply a list of links and needs no fancy frames, nervous text, or scrolling messages to accomplish this purpose.

Ok, we've got the legal stuff out of the way, here are the categories that I have placed the links to:

Recommended Sites - These sites might not have anything to do with Java, per se. But hey, I'm writing this web page and they hold valuable information. Give them a try and if you like them, please tell the site creators. We need more sites with great content on the web and only by letting the creators know they are appreciated can we encourage them to better efforts!

Companies - This is a very small list of companies doing things with Java. There are many, many more. You can find them by doing web searches.

Miscellaneous - This section holds links to pages of more links, a 2D animation tool, some tutorials, and other random stuff.

Organizations - Places where developers are meeting other developers and trying to form groups.

Java Repositories - This section holds links to places on the net that try to collect applets into one location. Of course, they all fail because there are so many of them. Try Gamelan first, then Yahoo. After that, just poke around at random.

Web Searching - This section has links to sites that let you look for keywords at web sites. For example, you could search for "Java" & "IDE" & "Win95" to find all web site that relate to Win95-enabled JAVA IDEs. I usually start by search at Alta Vista.

Java IDEs - Please note that I am not recommending any specific IDE. The choice is just too personal. However, if you want a place to start - try the Diva IDE. It is very easy to use and will be quite intutive for an experienced programmer to use.

Java Usage - This section holds some links to sites that are using Java in everyday life. It is by no means exhaustive, just some places that I've run across in my net travals.

Recommended Sites

The Bandwidth Conservation Society - These folks will help you to understand how to use graphics more effectively.
Brewing Java: A Tutorial - A pretty extensive introduction to the Java language. The page is over 240K long so be patient wide it loads!
Gamelan - This seems to be the number one place to look for Java applets and applications.
David Siegel's Home Page - This Web site contains much wisdom about how to design a web page. It has essays about when to use whitespace and how to choose colors and fonts. Block out an hour of your time and visit. By the way, one of the most important things that I learned was to only display ten to twelve words on a line. This makes computer text much more readable. The introductory paragraphs of this page are an example of this technique.
JAGG from BulletProof.com - Their WallStreetWeb program is the most complicated Java application that Ive seen so far. Looking at this program will make you believe that real development work can be done using Java.
The Java Developer: The How Do I... page - You can see this web site in several places on this page. Like other sites, they cover a multitude of Java topics. This particular page seems like a good start for a beginner.
JavaScript - ColorCenter - This site will help you select a color combination for web pages. However, its real value might lie in the fact that - using the View Source Netscape menu option - you can peek at the JavaScript that runs the page. I am recommended the site for this reason.
Thingtone's Java Workshop - I was impressed with the thought that seemed to go into this web site. Take a look.
Yahoo - Computers and Internet:Languages:Java - This site is where Yahoo stores links to Java pages.

Companies

Borland Online - This is where to go if you'd like your own copy of the Borland Debugger. You can also look at the latest news. And of course, they have a Java section.
JavaSoft - This is the home page for JavaSoft company. Lots of good documentation, links, and examples.
Quarterdeck Corporation Home Page - This is the home of WebCompass among other products. WebCompass is a unique search tools that lets you look for informaton on the Web. It uses multiple search engines to retreive a comprehensive list of documents relating to your topic of choice. You can also download a demo copy of their web server software. Please note that I have usually found the response time of the web site to be a little slow. However, Quarterdeck seems to have consistently good, well-thought out software.
Q&D Software Development Home Page - This is the home of WebForms and WebMania. WebForms let you use forms without knowing CGI. The information is collected by Q&D. WebMania is a full-featured HTML editor. Look at the page source for JavaScript applet that scrolls information in the status line of a web browser.

SourceCraft - This is the home of NetCraft, an IDE for Java. I'd tell you more about it but after clicking three links with further reference I got tired of looking. I'll let you do the work.
Sun's Java Site - JAVA's Home! Your Source for the most up to date information on JAVA. And you can also see the Sun Java documentation pages.

Miscellaneous

Java(tm) News - This site has press releases for the last 7 days (at least, I think that hold a weeks worth, they don't say). This might be a good site to good a close watch on.
The Java Package Tutorial - This site provides examples of importing classes from existing Java Packages, creating new Java Packages and adding to existing Java Packages. Recommended
Cafe Au Lait - A page of links.

Java Information Page - Another page of news and links.
Search the Java API and Tutorial - The creator of this web site has done a great service to the web community by making it possible to search through the Sun Java API and Tutorial.
The *new* AWT Tutorial - This web site holds an introduction to the Java AWT. While spotty in places, it may help to enhance your understanding of this difficult topic.
HORB Home Page In Their own words: HORB is an object oriented programming language that changes the style of WWW programming, Internet programming and parallel programming. It alllows you to create WWW pages containing interactive objects that communicate with objects running in your server, and forget CGI programming and socket programing. HORB works with Sun's Java(TM) language and the Netscape(TM) WWW browser (Version 2 or later).

TEA - This site features TEA - The Easy Animator - which is designed to bring drag-n-drop convenience to 2D Java animation.
Thalia: Guide: Color page - This web site will help you to pick colors for your web page background and link colors. This may not sound important but good combinations are harder to develop than you might realize. This web site makes the job a bit easier.

Organizations

TeamJava HQ - This site's mission is to promote and advance Java and assist Java consultants the world over in locating and completing contract work. We will strive to build up a pool of basic resources and support archives that will help in accelerating learning and project development, while avoiding the re-invention of common software modules and techniques.
The Java Developer - A great set of resources including a section getting JAVA folks employed.
IPGnet Mall - IPG, or the International Programmers Guild supports certification and has a newsletter with articles and programming tips.
The Java(tm) Developers Organization - The Java(tm) Developers Organization has been created to promote and protect the interests of Java developers. The primary purpose is to help Java developers create licenses for their applets, and provide a mechanism by which applet users will be required to enter into licenses prior to using such applets.
THE JAVA URN - My only comment about this site is that Their logo is too large for a frame in a web page. Take a look and if you agree, complain.
JAVA 65.2961 - This page is from the Department of Mathematical Sciences at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. They are trying to serve as a resource for students and RPI.

Java Repositories

Caffeine Connection - This web site boasts a Java repository and an on-line magazine. Take my advice and view the text-oriented pages. The Java-powered pages uses a lot of nervous text which just gets annoying after awhile.
Cool Applet of the Week - This site highlights a different applet every week.
Gamelan - This seems to be the number one place to look for Java applets and applications.
The Java Developer - A great set of resources including a section getting JAVA folks employed
Netscape's Java Info - Netscape's info page on JAVA for Netscape2.0 users. Includes links to more info as well as some sample applets.
Java Class Warehouse - This site is not to developed yet. But the web manager seems ambituous.
Project Cool - This site looks pretty interesting. It has various essays on different aspects of the web. It also has a Developer's Zone.
Black Coffee
noware - This web site allows you to add applets to your web pages with no programming. I didn't take the time to evaluate their offerings so I won't give you any more information.

Free Java Tools - Some Java programs written by a programmer who gives no name, only initials - kbs
The Web Development Cyberbase - Java - This site seems to contain a lot of information, but I was unimpressed with the way that the frames cropped part of the icons and the page was designed so that you can't change the size of the frames. Very annoying, if you ask me.

Web Searching

Alta Vista: Main Page - The first thing I do when I find a new search tool is look for my last name, Medinets. So far, every one in the world with my last name is related to me. If you have an unusual last name, do your own search - you never know who you might find. By the way, Alta vista also lets you search the Usenet Newsgroup postings. A very useful feature.

Yahoo - Computers and Internet:Languages:Java - This site is where Yahoo stores links to Java pages.
excite Netsearch
The NetCenter. - They have an ugly user interface but boast that they get over 100,000 hits a day. This might be a good place to start poking around the net. I prefer Web Crawler, Yahoo, or Alta Vista.

Java IDEs

Diva for Java - This is where you can download the Diva IDE that was described in the book. Please see the appendix for a description.
AimTech Corporation - AimTech is creating Their own IDE, code-named Cruiser. However, they do need to design better web pages. The press release page was especially tough to read with its courier font laid out against a pale purple background with white symbols. Take a look and see if you don't agree. Even press releases need to look good in order for people to read and understand them.
Innovative Software Germany - This company has created the Object Engineering WorkbenchTM for JavaTM (OEW for Java) which is an IDE featuring relational database schema design and reverse engineering. OEW for Java is available now for Microsoft Windows 95 and Windows NT. Versions for OS/2, Sun Solaris and HP-UX will follow soon. OEW for Java is controlled by a powerful and intuitive "drag&drop" user interface with context-sensitive online help. It also has support for databases.
ModelWorks Software - This is the home of JPad, a Java editor.
Soft As It Gets Home Page - You can find another Java IDE at this web site. I couldn't figure out its name though...

Hermetica: Nexus: Multi-User Virtual Reality - They use Java to create a real-time 3D world where users can interact with each other using avatars.

Jesse's Java Powered Homepage - This is the home of Plantation - a Java program that lets you interactively create a frame with controls and then generate Java code to support your design. Jesse posts a lot on the comp.lang.java newsgroup so be sure and support him.
