1 5Th July 1994
2 Mr. Preston recalled.
Cross-Examined by the defendants, continued.
3
MR. MORRIS: Where we left off yesterday was employment
4 conditions and pay.
5 MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes.
6 MR. MORRIS: I am still sorting my papers out.
(To the witness): Mr. Preston does your company take
7 health and safety seriously?
A. Yes, we do.
8
Q. Of its employees?
9 A. Of everybody.
10 Q. Do you monitor accidents ---
A. Yes, we do.
11
Q. -- In the stores. Do you compile statistics on an annual
12 basis for stores?
A. I think so, but I do not do it myself, no.
13
Q. But no, when I say "you" I generally mean the company, do
14 you, the company?
A. Records are kept of what has happened -- if anything
15 has.
16 Q. I am asking do you compile statistics?
A. I do not know.
17
Q. You do not know?
18 A. No.
19 Q. When you have your management meetings, these are heads of
departments, are they?
20 A. The meetings I held, we have talked about previously,
every Monday, every second Monday, that one?
21
Q. Yes?
22 A. Most of the time they are heads of department. If one
is away and there is a subject of emergency that needs to
23 be talked about, they might nominate a substitute to
present their material but, basically, it is the
24 department head or officer concerned, yes.
25 Q. Do you get a report of, say, sales figures from the
appropriate heads of department for that quarter or
26 whatever?
A. I get a financial review from our chief financial
27 officer of what is occurring in any given month, what he
thinks the different results are going to be knowing what
28 we know at a moment in time.
29 Q. On a national scale?
A. On whatever scale I want it; regionally, city wise,
30 nationally.
