Day 008 - 07 Jul 94 - Page 13

1 Q. In those days, mid 70s, were environmental matters of
great concern in the United States?
2 A. Well, the use "great" is a relative term -- I will
tell you what my recollection was. 1970 was a hallmark
3 year in American environmentalism. 1970 marked the day of
the first Earth Day, tremendous movement of many people in
4 the United States to take the environment seriously.

5 Many things transpired after 1970. There was a whole
range of environmental regulations that were enacted in
6 the United States during the 1970's. The United States
Environmental Protection Agency was formed in 1970. We
7 had no environmental protection agency prior to that. In
my opinion, there was a tremendous advancement of
8 environmental issues in the United States during the
              1970's.
     9
         Q. Can you take, please, the pink volume with large Roman IV
10 on it and turn to the first divider which describes itself
as a draft report by the Stanford Research Institute,
    11 Menlo Park, California?
              A. Got it.
    12
         Q. On the next page we see that the date of this draft report
    13 is December 1974, January 1975, right?
              A. Correct.
    14
         Q. Can you tell us, do you know what the Stanford Research
    15 Institute is?
              A. It was an independent research firm.
    16
         Q. It is not a part of Stanford University?
    17 A. No.

18 Q. Can you turn to page 11 -- look at the big numbers on the
              bottom of the page?
    19 A. Yes.

20 Q. It is headed, I think that is meant to be large Roman II,
"Polystyrene versus Paper -- The Factual Perspective"?
    21 A. Yes.

22 MR. MORRIS: Sorry, are we on page 5?

23 MR. RAMPTON: No, 11. Drop your eyes to the middle of the page
where there is an underlined subheading: "Primary
24 conclusions on factual environmental tradeoff between
              polystyrene/plastic and paper products.
    25
Two central conclusions are available from the research to
26 date: 1. There appears to be no supportable basis for
any claim that paper-related products are superior from an
27 environmental standpoint to plastic-related ones,
              including polystyrene.
    28
              2. The weight of existing evidence to date, for which
29 there is no countermanding data, indicates that the
favorable true environmental balance, if any, would be in
30 the direction of the plastic-related product".
