references: "Other cancers that have been related to fat
intake are those of the rectum, ovaries and endometrium"
-- endometrium, of course, being a portion of the
uterus. "Considerable uncertainties remain to be resolved
about these relationships. For example, the effects of
different types of dietary fat (i.e., saturated versus
unsaturated; animal versus plant origin) have not been
separated in most human studies. But the weights of the
studies to date are strongly suggestive of the role for
dietary fat in the etiology of some types of cancer".

Let me emphasise a few points in this paragraph: As is
stated in the very beginning using the word
"carcinogenesis", meaning the origins of cancer, using
the words "cancer promoting role", and in the final
sentence of that paragraph, "the role of dietary fat in
the etiology", all of these are references to causation,
not simply to association. Moreover, the -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Just pause there, yes. Carry on.
       A. The Surgeon General does acknowledge that there are
some inconsistencies in the data which are well known and
quite clearly known to all researchers and have been
brought up in this trial. However, the weight of the
evidence was such that the Surgeon General felt that there
was still, in his words: "The studies to date are
strongly suggestive of the role of dietary fat in the
       etiology"; in other words, cause of some types of cancer;
the types of cancer he mentions first, the first two are
breast and colon. In other words, what seems to be
somewhat in doubt is the mechanisms precisely by which fat
does cause the increase in cancer. What seems less in
doubt is the fact that there is a role for fat in the
       causation of cancer.

Going to the next paragraph under the heading: "Human
Epidemiologic Studies. The risk for breast cancer is
correlated with total fat consumption in comparisons of
countries", then several references are given in
parenthesis. " ... districts in Japan and ethnic groups
in Hawaii. The risk for cancers of the colon and prostate
is also correlated with total fat consumption in
international comparisons", and three references are given
for that. "A worldwide correlation between breast and
colon cancer mortality and total fat consumption has been
demonstrated and is illustrated for breast cancer death
       rates".

It makes a reference to figure 4.3 which occurs earlier in
this document, and simply shows a direct correlation when
various countries are compared versus their fat intake.
Numerous investigators have described this as a striking
       correlation.

The next paragraph: "Although further epidemiologic study
is needed to verify the association between diet and
breast cancer and to elucidate its biologic basis, the
consistency of the evidence derived from the epidemiologic
and animal studies suggests that the association may be
causal. Table 4.7 summarises certain key (although
