Day 036 - 13 Oct 94 - Page 05
Q. Those are the authorities for the proposition that the
relationships between specific dietary components and
cancer are much less well established than those between
diet and cardiovascular disease?
A. Yes. People are still sorting out the roles of
saturated fat versus total fat, for example.

MR. MORRIS: We do not have the references. That is probably
our mistake. I am sure it is not important, but if the
Plaintiffs think it is important, then we will have to
endeavour to get them.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Were you not handed -- oh, of the
references?

MR. MORRIS: Just the references.

MR. RAMPTON: My belief is that this is a Defendants' document.

MR. MORRIS: Sorry; yes, we do have ----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: What page do the references appear on,
Mr. Rampton?

MR. RAMPTON: 176, my Lord.

MR. MORRIS: Sorry, we do have those.

MR. RAMPTON: They go over as far as 179. Perhaps your
Lordship would keep a finger in -- I am not sure that is
right. Those are the references for the appendix. The
true references, or the main references are 162.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: That would figure, looking at what they are.

MR. RAMPTON: Yes. So, indeed, if your Lordship would not mind
keeping a finger in page 164 (and if you have got it, you
too, please, Dr. Barnard) as I read on: "However, the
overall impact" ----
A. I hate to say this, but if those pages are to be
important, I do not seem to have them again. I am not
sure if this is something you are going to refer to.

Q. No. I am going to give you some information in a moment
and I hope that everybody else will agree that the
information I give is correct, because they can verify it
by reference to the pages having got 164. Before I read
on, can I ask you this: In the light of what it there
says and the source for that proposition, would you agree
that the answer you gave a moment ago needs adjusting? It
is not, is it, to do with mechanisms, although that may be
part of the question, it is to do with the role of
specific dietary components, is it not?
A. Part of that is mechanisms.

Q. Yes, I understand.
A. Part of that is overall effect; there may be other
interactions there as well.

Q. The identification of mechanism -- sorry?
