Day 043 - 01 Nov 94 - Page 52

MR. JUSTICE BELL: No. It was just where you said "fact" or
"comment", and so on, where Mr. Morris was making his own
       comments in opening.

MR. RAMPTON: (To the witness) Another question, while we are
on this, Mr. Green: do you believe that McDonald's food is
       fairly priced?
       A. Yes, I do. I think it is very good value, especially
in the United States. It is a bit of better value than it
was four or five years ago, actually.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: It occurs to me that although you get more
than a dollar for a pound, just, the prices look about the
same in dollars as they are in pounds, very broadly
speaking, in 1991, comparing with some of the ads.

MR. RAMPTON: Then it looks as though the English are getting a
       better deal than the Americans.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: No. The Americans -- the other way around --
what costs us £2 is worth something like $2.50 or whatever,
       or $2.

THE WITNESS: I am not familiar totally with the conversion
rate, but I believe it is very good value, obviously, in
       the United States.

MR. RAMPTON: How then do you react to the suggestion that your
advertising puts pressure on families with children to buy
food at McDonald's which they cannot afford?
       A. I do not believe that is true. In fact, I think if you
look at a meal at McDonald's in comparison to almost any
other meal that you could get in the United States, whether
it is a carry out meal or even a meal at our competition,
I think you will find us equally, if not more, affordable
       than almost any alternative.

  Q. Have you any idea -- and if you have not, say so -- what is
the comparative cost of a meal at McDonald's and an
equivalent meal bought in a supermarket and eaten at home?
       A. I do not have that information.

  Q. Fair enough. I want to ask you about what I call Ronald on
the ground, because Ronald exists not just on the
television, he exists in his suit actually in the street,
       does he not?
       A. Yes. We have Ronald appearances similar to what
       happens here in England.

  Q. Yes; and all over the world, I take it?
       A. That is correct.

  Q. When Ronald is in Latin America, what language does he
       speak?
       A. He always speak the native language.

  Q. He always look the same?
       A. He looks pretty much the same. We try to have some
consistency for how Ronald looks. But even, for example,
