Day 071 - 11 Jan 95 - Page 24

       Mr. Cantwell or Mrs. Higson?
       A. No. I have spoken to Mrs. Earle on the telephone at
approximately the same time, but I have never met her in
       person.

  Q. Again there is nothing in that I particularly want to draw
your attention to; I simply ask you to note it in passing.
It is roughly the same date, 27th November. Then the Smith
Street Residents Association on page 790, 30th November
1993. The first paragraph mentions the basements. You
have told us about that so I will not ask you any more
about that. The second paragraph, the last sentence but
one, the one beginning "The establishments", have you got
       that?

MR. MORRIS: What page are we on?

MR. RAMPTON: 70. It mentions McDonald's and Haagen Dazs very
close by. Then it says this: "The establishments
themselves have no clean-up procedure other than a environment/index.html">litter
bin immediately outside their front premises. McDonald's
used to operate a environment/index.html">litter patrol but this broke down some
       time ago." True or false?
       A. I would say false.

  Q. "We have complained to them but get no response." So far as
McDonald's is concerned, is that true or false?
       A. As far as I am concerned, that is false. I have never
spoken to Miss Robson or Mrs. Robson.

  Q. If you get a complaint, it comes to you whether through
Mr. Cobden or directly from a resident, do you ignore it or
       do you respond to it?
       A. No, we respond to it promptly.

  Q. Then she says: "BFI do not seem to come along and sweep up
very often. The resulting mess is horrible. We get a much
better service when Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea
was responsible for street sweeping." This, of course, is
not addressed to you; it is addressed to the Borough
itself, Dr. Munday, who is apparently the Chairman of
Public Health and Works Committee I suppose. Who are BFI?
       A. They are private contractors hired by the Royal Borough
to do the rubbish collections and to keep the streets
       clean.

  Q. Are they different from or the same as the ones that you
       use?
       A. Sorry, I do not understand?

  Q. Are BFI the contractors that McDonald's uses or not?
       A. No. We did use them for a short period of time, but we
were not happy with their service.

  Q. So did you then change to somebody else?
       A. We did, yes.

  Q. Are you happy with the service which those other people
       provide you?
       A. We are now, yes.
