MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, Professor Ashworth is here. There has
been a slight accident in this respect, that he had assumed
-- I hope rightly -- that he was going to be a relatively
a short witness. On Friday he arranged for an appointment
with the Secretary of State for the Environment for
3 o'clock today. I am afraid we did not know that until
last night. I am proposing to take him very shortly
in-chief anyway. It may be by one means or another we can
finish him in time to release him to go to his
appointment. It is, of course, entirely a matter for your
Lordship. He can come back, of course, if he is not
finished at some future date.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I think we should see how we go. That would
involve leaving about 20 to 3, would it, or something like
that?

MR. RAMPTON: Something like that, yes. It is in Whitehall.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: It is a taxi ride to Whitehall, really. What
I suggest we do is we go on until 1 o'clock or just before;
we might resume a few minutes early before 2 o'clock. We
will break off at 20 to 3, come what may, and if we finish
by then, well and good; if we have not, we will sort it
out.

MR. RAMPTON: I am grateful to your Lordship.
