Day 075 - 17 Jan 95 - Page 35

       A. Well, The Association of District Councils, The
Association of Metropolitan Authorities, the Scouts, the
Guides, The Institute of Waste Management -- I mean, there
are either trade associations, local authority
associations, voluntary sector groups, people of that sort.

  Q. When you talked about accepting sponsorship from companies,
you said that you would not accept it if the companies'
activities were not consistent with the Tidy Britain
Group's concerns. Have you actually ever declined
       sponsorship from companies?
       A. Yes.

  Q. What was that for?
       A. We declined sponsorship of our education and materials
       from the tobacco industry.

  Q. On what grounds was that?
       A. That we felt it was, or the Council felt it was,
inconsistent to be seeing a company involved with the
promotion of smoking materials in relation to our
educational materials that went into schools.

  Q. So that was because of the health implications for
       children?
       A. That was the Council's view, I think, yes.

  Q. What about other examples of declining sponsorship?
       A. The other one has only been in relation to, I think
(although we did not get very far in it), there were some
concerns about the public perception of the Group accepting
sponsorship from those associated with the nuclear
       industry.

  Q. Are those the only two examples?
       A. That I can recall during my time, yes.

  Q. For example, I think you said that you had had some
       sponsorship from Coca Cola?
       A. Yes.

  Q. You also said that their cans were probably the most
numerous on the streets of Britain?
       A. They frequently appear so, yes.

  Q. So do you not see that as conflicting with your concerns?
       A. I do not follow the line of reasoning. Why -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Would you have to exclude everyone who sold
       soft drinks?
       A. That is right, yes.

  Q. You would have to say: "No-one in the soft drink industry
can sponsor any of our products"?
       A. We also receive sponsorship from Smith Kline Beecham
who produce Ribena which is -----

MS. STEEL: What has Coca Cola done in practice then?
       A. In practice, in what respect?
