Day 088 - 13 Feb 95 - Page 08
Q. What do we call these pigs? Is there a special name for
these pigs?
A. We call them "weaners".

Q. You call them "weaners"?
A. Yes.

Q. Then if you go right over to the other side of the page,
there are two smaller pictures. What is the bottom one a
picture of where it says "Pigs outside in a healthy
environment".
A. That is piglets.

Q. This is before they are weaned then, is it?
A. Yes, it is. Probably your picture should be the other
way round.

Q. Maybe. Above that it says: "A Bowes finishing unit with a
cereal crop in the foreground". How many such units do you
have?
A. Are you asking me which we own?

Q. Yes, which you own?
A. Right, we have two units of such we own.

Q. At what weight are the pigs brought in from the fields, or
wherever it may be, to be finished?
A. For the freedom food system, it is 40 kilograms, they
go into the finishing units, and from our indoor production
it is 30 kilograms.

Q. I am going to come back to the freedom food thing -- I do
not want you to think I have passed it by -- in much more
detail later on, Mr. Bowes. At what weight are they
slaughtered?
A. About 90 kilograms live weight.

Q. Live weight?
A. Yes

Q. In the middle of this page we see a picture of some pigs on
straw inside a shed or barn, what is that shed?
A. In the middle of the page?

Q. Yes.
A. Well, this is our lairage, sir.

Q. At the slaughterhouse?
A. Yes, and that is a veterinarian standing there watching
the pigs coming off and inspecting them.

Q. The gentleman with the helmet and the glasses?
A. That is correct.

Q. At the back there is what looks like a lorry marked "Bowes
of Norfolk"?
A. That is correct.

Q. Is that used to transport the pigs from the farm, or
wherever it is, to the slaughterhouse?
