Q. Is that to become Floor Managers or ---
A. To go ---

Q. -- or to go on to salaried?
A. -- no, to go to floor management because you could also
qualify to be a Floor Manager working one day a week, so
I had people at the polytechnic that wanted to do that as
well.

MR. RAMPTON: You mentioned the performance review which comes
at the end of the probationary period. You said your
predecessor had fallen down on that. Were your performance
reviews conducted regularly?
A. Once the initial systems were set up, yes.

Q. What proportion of those performance reviews were pay
related, in other words, resulted in a pay rise or not, as
the case may be?
A. Well, the probationary ones, normally, we would give
some sort of pay rise if they have successfully completed
the first three weeks.

Q. So in most cases somebody would after three weeks get an
increase on top of the basic hourly rate?
A. Yes, that is correct.

Q. Can you remember what increase would you give at that
stage?
A. Normally 10 to 15, some fives -- a mixture.

Q. Everybody gets a performance review?
A. Yes.

Q. Overall, what proportion of them were pay related in the
sense that they could result in a pay rise?
A. From what I remember, I am pretty sure that every three
months you received a performance review of which every
second one, so it would be like every six months -- I could
be wrong; it might have even be every two months -- so you
received a pay review every four months, every two PR
something like that.

Q. As there were in those days, I think there are now, three
levels pay rises, five, 10 and 15p, yes?
A. Yes.

Q. Was the 15p one ever given?
A. Oh, yes, quite frequently.

Q. And the 10p?
A. Yes.

Q. And the 5p?
A. Yes.

Q. Which was the most frequent one?
A. Probably say the 10.

Q. Do you know when you took over, and obviously you had to
recruit to make up your additional 40 per cent, what
