Day 158 - 19 Jul 95 - Page 11

MR. RAMPTON: I do not, but I will certainly provide copies. It
was his Lordship who asked for it.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Which further application are you going to
       deal with first?

MS. STEEL: I did want to add something else, actually.
I listened to the tape-recording last night. Whilst myself
and Mr. Morris come out fairly clearly, parts of what
everybody else says are inaudible. Parts are just about
audible, so it is a help, but it is in no way an effective
substitute. Even if we had the time to listen to it, there
are still quite large parts which are virtually inaudible.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: You should think a bit more about where you
place it, if it is picking up you all right and it is right
       next to you.

MS. STEEL: It picks up Mr. Morris, as well.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Why not have it somewhere more in the middle?

MS. STEEL: The problem is, we would not have anyone to operate
       it.

MR. RAMPTON: I would not agree to that at all, because it would
then pick up confidential things that I was saying to
Mr. Atkinson and Mrs. Brinley-Codd. If that is what they
are reduced to, so be it; they must make the best use they
can, but they cannot impinge on our confidentiality.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: That may be. But if it is, for instance, in
the middle of the front of the Associate's desk, can there
be any objection to that? The Associate should not be
hearing what you are saying, anyway.

MR. RAMPTON: Oh, there, my Lord? I thought your Lordship meant
       here.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I was thinking of that, until you said what
       you did say.

MR. RAMPTON: There is no objection to it being there.

MS. STEEL: There are two problems. Firstly, we cannot operate
it from over there, but also that -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: All you want is to have it on, do you not?

MS. STEEL: But we have to turn the tapes, and things like that.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: How often does that happen?

MS. STEEL: Every 45 minutes. But it is -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I cannot engineer things for you. If you
want to place it somewhere else, then tell me about it.

MS. STEEL: It is also the point that it is because we do not
