Day 175 - 18 Oct 95 - Page 07

MR. MORRIS: Mr. Whittle, you worked at Sutton McDonald's; yes?
A. That is right.

Q. That was between 1983 and 1986?
A. Yes.

Q. Right. Before we go into those matters, what age are you?
A. I am 31.

Q. What jobs have you done since you left McDonald's?
A. I have worked for the Inland Revenue, firms of
chartered accountants; I have also done -- I have also
travelled and during those times I have worked as a hotel
porter, a delivery driver; and I am currently working as a
credit controller and book keeper for a jewellery firm.

Q. Your present job, does that involve responsibility for
looking after money?
A. It does. I am responsible for all the money going in
and out of the business, and I am also responsible for the
staff wages.

Q. What I am going to do is read your statement and then ask
you to explain various things that you said in your
statement.

MR. RAMPTON: I am sorry to be a nuisance so early on in the
day, but your Lordship did say that any supplementary
questions would need leave. I do not know that Mr. Morris
means by "explanation" of various parts of the statement.
But we ought, with respect, at least to have some notice of
what sort of thing Mr. Morris is talking about. Mr. Morris
is not entitled, under the terms of your Lordship's
rulings, just to do as he pleases. He has to have leave to
ask supplementary questions apart from introductory
matters.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: What I suggest is, let us deal with the
statement first of all in the way you said.

MR. MORRIS: Yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I give you leave, unless Mr. Rampton wishes
to say anything, to ask questions designed to elicit the
matters in your notes dated 3rd October 1995, because they
are your notes rather than an additional statement of
Mr. Whittle. When we get to that stage, I would like you
to tell me what, if any, other matters you want to ask
Mr. Whittle about.

MR. MORRIS: As expected, and as I said a few days ago,
Mr. Rampton is continuously extending the restriction that
he hopes to place on our witnesses' evidence. What, as
I understand it, the ruling was, was that any new matters
would have to have leave. I am going to ask him to explain
what he means in his statement which was, whenever it was,
a year ago, and that is entirely the purpose of someone
coming to give evidence.
