Day 278 - 11 Jul 96 - Page 09
A. Actually, I have not got them. I am thinking of the
other pleadings.

Q. Can I ask you to look at the paragraph entitled, "Big B,
Recycling Waste" on what is the third page of the pleading
at page 825, my Lord.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes.

MR. RAMPTON: The third paragraph under "Recycling Waste" says
this: "In 1972 Bruce Hannon, an engineer at the University
of Illinois determined that 315 square miles of forest
would have to be cut down to keep McDonald's supplied with
paper packaging for one year." Did you read this defence
before it was served or these particulars?
A. I expect I read it, yes.

Q. That is not what Mr. Hannon said at all was it? Shall I
show you what Mr. Hannon said? My Lord, this is a document
disclosed by Mr. Morris.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I remember Mr. Morris just interjecting to
point out that the article which it--

MR. RAMPTON: I had a problem finding--
A. We only got this article, I think, within the last
couple of years so it can't have been that that was used to
write the pleading.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Well, you borrow it for a moment, but
somewhere I have actually put this in a file.

MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, it is only a very short passage.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I don't want more than one copy. That is the
trouble, I end up with several copies of everything.

MR. RAMPTON: I will have to check the transcript for that last
answer, Miss Steel, but my recollection is that Mr. Morris
said at the time was that somehow it got overlooked because
it was sitting in one of the many piles of papers at his
house; do you remember that?
A. I don't remember, to be honest. I remember that it was
only served in the last couple of years.

Q. If you would be kind enough, please, look at the two
paragraphs at the bottom of the first column above the
cross-heading, "fourth largest". It says McDonald's--
A. Where are we?

Q. Sorry, first column, the two paragraphs above the
cross-heading at the bottom, top of the page, "fourth
largest", and it says, "McDonald's total consumption of
paper nevertheless is £174M a year and growing". Hannon
said, "It takes a sustained yield of 315 square miles of
forest to keep supplied with paper packaging for one year",
he said?
A. I cannot actually. You said underneath the heading?

Q. Sorry, above the heading.
