Day 295 - 06 Nov 96 - Page 05

I think they just skated through that. Obviously, he
concentrated mainly on welfare. But I was just briefly
checking something on Dr. Long's transcripts and there are
quite a lot of references to the production and slaughter
end of this argument on this issue, and I believe you said
that you would be reading him, anyway, regarding welfare.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I had it in mind that I would reread Dr.
       Long anyway.

  MR. MORRIS: Right.

  MR. JUSTICE BELL: The transcript.

MR. MORRIS: I would appreciate it if you could note -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: So you would like me to keep an eye open for
       food safety factors.

MR. MORRIS: Yes, any food safety issue. I notice with their
notes they have only put day 113 references, so it is
possible they only checked the first day of his evidence.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Just pause a moment. (Pause) Yes.

MR. MORRIS: Page 15 seems to have printed out wrongly, so it
refers to the evidence of David Wignall. He was questioned
about cooking times. I am sure you would have made notes
       at the time.

  MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes.

MR. MORRIS: But under 1B on that page, we noted about the
increase of cooking times before the Preston incident, and
afterwards as well. Obviously, in terms of the relevant
time that this case is focusing on, which is the late '80s
up to 1990, then the cooking times would have been
substantially shorter than they are now.

The reference to Clare Druce at the bottom goes on over the
page at the top, page 16, so there seems to be a big mix-up
       there, but there we go.

Page 17, the evidence of John Atherton -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Hold on a moment. Oh, I see, that line at
       the top.

MR. MORRIS: Yes. In fact, the word 'immuno' at the end
continues, believe it or not, on the previous page inside
the box at the top. So there is a big mix-up there.

  MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes.

MR. MORRIS: That is the direct quote, 'immuno compromised',
which I quoted anyway in my round up of core points.

  MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes.

MR. MORRIS: Page 17, John Atherton, head of training,
