Middle Class?

I'm not quite sure about something and I wonder if I can get some opinions on it. It's has to do with the middle class and its size. I've typically heard from the media and other establishment sources that the middle class is growing while the other classes are shrinking. By my own experiences and from what other people say it seems that the working class and "lower" class is growing. I'm inclined to believe the latter but I have heard some socialists saying the former. I'd be interested in any ideas/figures out there that would help settle the issue.
