Sure, we all might decide as a society to manage our consumption of energy wisely, to avoid a permanent energy crisis in the next century. But capitalism provides society as a whole with no incentive to make that decision, because capitalism allows most of the energy decisions to be made by those who concentrate on short-term profits.

In the future, will we be living in the past or present? The discussion about alternatives to capitalism (forget about labels like "communism," it's post-capitalism we're discussing here) revolves around the shape of the future of the world. The world of the future will be IRREVOCABLY changed by the present domination of the world by global corporations under capitalism, so it is safe to assume that the future will not merely repeat the past or present.
