I worked for McDonalds (UK) when I turned sixteen - Although the pay was relatively low, I needed a job that would not coincide with my college - since there were no other places that could offer me so called "flexible hours," I took on the job. During my 3 1/2 years of working there, I suffered many injustices. Often enough, employees would not show up for their shifts. Many a time, Managers used to try and force me to stay on. If I didn't comply with their wishes, managers would schedule me fewer hours the following week. I used to work on average 24 hours a week - I was then cut down to 6 hours a week. It was only when I submitted to their bullying, my scheduled hours would increase again.
I remember a few times, that when my old store was short on people to close up - I was also asked to stay on past midnight. As this was illegal for someone under the age of eighteen to do this, they used to adjust the clock-in machine to make out as though you started early. However, at least they had the decency to either give you a lift home or order a paid taxi for you.
Even though employees receive performance related pay-rises every 3 months, the question one should ask is does the amount (which ranges from 0 to 15 pence - that is, 0 -20 cents), match the current rate of inflation?
Before you consider taking on a job with McDonalds, ask yourself this: Is my time REALLY worth the minimum wage? If you do choose to try it out and you are especially pursuing an education, don't you think it is a waste of time doing these demeaning jobs? You could be studying to better yourself. Sacrificing a little time now should bring positive results for your future. Don't be a slave to capitalism
None.
