Each year, before they go onto university studies, several English students volunteer to spend a 12 months in Cuba helping to tutor English to Cuban students at the school – paying for their own travel and expenses to do so. They live on the campus, in small cottages formerly inhabited by the army base's officers.
Some of the students spend time after school visiting their tutors, and playing outside.
