This is the Plaza de la Revolution in the city of Santiago de Cuba. The sculpture of the figure on the horse is Mßximo G≤mez, a Cuban General who helped lead a revolt against the Spanish at the end of last century. The spikes in front of the figure represent the raised machetes of the sugar cane workers who followed him, and made up the bulk of the fighters against the Spaniards.
Santiago de Cuba was the cradle for two attempted revolutions against the Spanish in the late 19th century (the second attempt was interrupted by the Spanish-American War in which the United States invaded Cuba and drove the Spanish out), and was also the cradle for the Cuban Revolution in the 1950s. Because of this, Santiago de Cuba has been given the official title "Hero City".
