The Visconde de Mauß Handicraft Institute, located in Pelourinho in Salvador, has an outstanding collection of Bahian pottery for sale. These pieces, hand-shaped or turned on a wheel (large vessels), are sometimes fired in a kiln or over bonfires. Some are primitive pieces; others made by highly-skilled craftsmen.
The pottery of Maragogipinho is dyed red with tauß pigmentation (extracted from a clay rich in iron), then painted in white (pigmentation extracted from a white clay call tabatinga), with flowered drawings. The artisans of Cachoeira and Itabuna are mostly sculptors, modeling saints and orixßs. I brought back three beautiful pieces: one of them is Iemanjß, mother of all orixßs. It's the best place to shop for all kinds of Bahian crafts. Here's their address: Rua Greg≤rio de Matos, 27, Pelourinho, Salvador, Bahia. We also have a large JPEG of Iemanjß and a large JPEG of a water container in the shape of a young woman.
