Georgetown University School for Summer and Continuing Education and the Department of Portuguese offer a program in Portuguese language and Brazilian culture at the Universidade Estadual de Campinas (Unicamp), located in Campinas, about 95 km northwest of Sπo Paulo. The program is the brainchild of Dr. Naomi Hoki Moniz, a native of Sπo Paulo, who is also the Program Director and a member of the Faculty. Unicamp is considered unique among Brazilian universities for its involvement in research and close ties with industry and business.
The program offers three courses in different levels of language proficiency, one course in literature and one in culture, as well as internship possibilities. The students also spend a week at the Mariana campus of the Federal University of Ouro Preto. This alone is worth the trip: Mariana is a lovely Baroque town in the mountains of the state of Minas Gerais and the students are lodged in a typical pousada or inn (check out the pictures they sent us!)
