New religions and religious cults are spread over Japan like in most other countries in the world. The AUM Cult with its leader Shoko Asahara who is now arrested have been in the center of interest for several years: Members of the cult were murdered and attacks on the public were carried out during the past years. The most sensational coup was the Tokyo subway gas attack in 1995 with the nerve gas sarin. Several people died and thousands were injured. Japan was shocked and the search for the criminals was enormeous. Wanted lists were put everywhere in the public. In the meantime most of the key members have been arrested, Asahara included.
