A brief history of Middle-Earth (and Aman's early history I guess)... Most of the really important events are here. I'll expand on the War of the Ring later. Might also put up some interesting time periods to set a MERP campaign in.The timeline is a collection of dates from various MERP modules, The Complete Guide to Middle-Earth (Robert Foster), and another book whose name I've forgotten for the moment... I'll find it later. Pre-First Age :The eras I to XVII represent indeterminate periods of time. I | Creation of Ea. The Valar and Maiar enter. | II | First War. Melkor(Morgoth) is defeated. Tulkas enters Ea. | III | Lamps of the Valar are made. Tulkas marries Nessa. The Valar settle Almaren. | IV | Melkor returns to Arda, creating a fortress - Utumno. | V | Melkor pulls down the Lamps (I think there is an adventure involing the Lamps in the Angmar module). Almaren destroyed. | VI | The Valar raise the Pelori Mountains as a defense and settle in Aman. | VII | Valar create the Two Trees, beginning the measure of time. | VIII | Elves awaken in Cuivienen. Melkor captures some, perverting them into Orcs. | IX | Orome discovers the Elves, who begin the Great Journey. Melkor is chained. Thingol weds Melian. | X | Some of the Elves arrive in Aman, others (the Sindar) settle in Beleriand. Luthien is born. | XI | Aule creates the dwarves, who settle in Beleriand, in the Ered Luin. Thingol builds Menegroth. | XII | Evil things stir in Beleriand. | XIII | Melkor is released from his chains, and leads astray the sons of Finwe (the Ancestors of the Noldor), resulting in Feanor being banished, and Melkor dissapearing. | XIV | Melkor and Ungoliant poison the Two Trees, kill Finwe, and steal the Silmarils. Ungoliant drains the Wells of Varda. | XV | Melkor and Ungoliant flee across the Helcaraxe (bit of land to far north joining Middle-Earth and Aman), getting into a fight at Lammoth. Melkor builds Angband. The Noldor revolt, resulting in the Kinslaying. Melkor invades Beleriand. The Girdle of Melian is raised. | XVI | Feanor burns his ships at Losgar. Fingolfin marches across the Helcaraxe, losing many men. The Valar make the Moon and Sun. | XVII | Fingolfin reaches Beleriand. Sun and Moon rise. | First Age : 1 | Years of the Sun begin. Numenoreans founded Tharbad. | 1200 | Sauron, calling himself Annatar (the Lord of Gifts) attempts to win over Celebrimor and the Elves of Ost-in-Ehdil. Galadriel is not won over by Sauron. | 1200-1500 | Numenoreans build fortresses along the coast of Middle-earth. | ~1500 | Sauron and the smiths of Ost-in-Ehdil begin work on the rings of power. | 1580 | Sauron from Mordor starts work on the One Ring. | 1590 | Celebrimbor finishes the three Elven rings: Narya, Nenya, and Vilya. | ~1600 | Sauron finishes Barad-dur. Sauron finishes the One Ring. | 1601 | Sauron demands the Three Elven Rings. | 1695 | Sauron attacks Eriador. | 1697 | Ost-in-Ehdil falls, Celebrimbor is tortured and slain. He reveals the location of the seven Dwarven Rings, but not the three Elven rings. | 1699 | Sauron gets control over Eriador. | 1700 | Tar-Minastir sends a great fleet from Numenor to assist the Elves against Sauron. Sauron is defeated and retreats to Mordor. | 2200 | The Nazgul appear. | 2350 | Pelargir built. | 3261 | Ar-Pharazon captures Sauron and brings him to Numenor. | 3319 | Ar-Pharazon sails to Valinor. The faithful flee to Eriador. | 3320 | Elendil establishes the realms in exile: Arnor and Gondor. | 3429 | Sauron attacks Gondor. | 3430 | Last alliance of Elves and Men formed to defeat Sauron. | 3441 | Barad-dur falls. Isildur cuts the One Ring from Sauron's finger and keeps it. | Third Age : 1 | Tower of Orthanc (Isenguard) is built. | 2 | Isildur dies on the Gladden fields on the way to Arnor. | 250-850 | Decline of Arnor. Arnor splits into Arthedain, Cardolan, and Rhudar? | 1000 | Sauron's spirit reforms in Arda. Istari sent to Middle-Earth. | 1048 | The Ringwraiths return to Middle-earth. Sauron (known as "The Necromancer") settles in Dol Guldur. | | 2063 | Gandalf enters Dol Guldur. Sauron, wishing to remain hidden flees to the east for the next 400 years. | 2460 | Sauron returns from the east. | 2463 | White Council is established to investigate the 'Necromancer'. Deagol finds the one ring, and is killed by Smeagol (Gollum) for it. | 2470 | Smeagol hides in the Misty Mountains. | 2710 | Dunmen take Orthanc. | 2758 | Easterlings invade Rohan. The Haradrim of Umbar attacks Gondor. Helms Deep and Dunharrow are besieged by the Dunmen. | 2759 | Dunmen driven from Orthanc. Saruman given the keys to Orthanc. | 2770 | Smaug destroys Erebor and Dale. | 2830-2903? | Roharrim drive the Dunmen from Westfold. | 2911-2912 | The Fell Winter. White wolves overrun both sides of the Misty Mountains. Tharbad falls. | 2941 | The White Council drives Sauron from Dol Guldur. | 2953 | Last meeting of the White Council. Saruman claims Orthanc as his own, starts building up his forces and starts a search of the Gladden fields for the One Ring. | 3000 | Saruman's use of the Palantir causes him to fall under power of Sauron. | 3018-3019 | War of the Ring. The One Ring is destroyed. Sauron loses his link to Middle-Earth. More later. | 3021 | End of the Third Age. The Ring-Bearers goto the Undying Lands. |
