AFS Images Through Time

A History in Photos brought to you
by the AFS Archives and Museum.
With thanks for contributions
by Mr. Alan Albright.

The Beginning

A. Piatt Andrew (1873-1936), founder of the
American Field Service, ca. 1918.
Andrew founded the American
Ambulance Field Service in Paris in 1914.

Stephen Galatti (1888-1964), a famous Harvard
quarterback, became Piatt Andrew's right-hand man
at Field Service Headquarters after first serving in
Section 3 in Alsace.

After Andrew's death in 1936, it was Galatti who revived
the AFS Ambulance Service in 1939 and who served as
the Director General of AFS International Scholarships.
