Internships for academic credit provide an invaluable complement to classroom work for students spending a full academic year in Vienna. Internships are worth four semester hours credit and are conducted during the Spring term. An academic background in the subject area is required. Below is a list of internships offered in the past and the areas of interest they cover. For descriptions and specific requirements, please contact the Office of International Education.

*Full year students who wish to participate in this internship will spend their second semester in the provincial center of Graz. Students intern in the English department of a teacher training college, while taking classes at the college in the humanities and social sciences.

For most London students, the internship is an integral part of their academic experience. Internships carry four semester hours of credit and typically involve a minimum 8-10 hours per week of on-site work, in addition to written assignments and conferences. POLITICAL SCIENCE
Parliamentry Internships - Internships involve aiding the running of the office, shadowing the Member of Parliament (M.P.), research, working with other M.P.s and assisting the M.P. and their assistants. Students will be exposed to the particular areas of interest of the M.P. they are working under, and will often have to visit the M.P.s constituency (often quite far from London), sometimes on weekends. Interns should have a strong interest in politics and world news/issues and be comfortable communicating with politicians, influential business people, etc.

Internships and service learning projects for academic credit provide an invaluable complement to classroom work . Both can be arranged in a social service, educational, or business setting and are worth 1 - 3 semester hours. Listed below are internships which students have completed recently. Please note that some internships require that students have at least an intermediate knowledge of Spanish. For further information, contact the Office of International Education.

Teaching/Social Service

Hogares Juveniles A.C. - Tutoring and supervision at a home for homeless boys in downtown Merida.
Normal College - English teaching at a teacher training school (working with Mexican teachers and elementary school students).
Casa Cuna - Organizing play, physical therapy, teaching swimming at government orphanage, working with the psychologist.
School for the Blind - Aiding teachers at a school for sighted and non-sighted children.
Escuela Bilingue Mani - Teaching and aiding in English classes at a bilingual Spanish/Maya village school.
Ibero School - K-12 students assist in curriculum development (bilingual school in Mérida).
CEDART School - Teaching English at a government-sponsored high school for the arts.

Wales Icon Carmarthen

Service learning opportunities with various organizations in Carmarthen are available to interested students. These are strictly volunteer opportunities, but students may earn two semester hours of credit for their participation. Such opportunities are a great way to immerse oneself in the local culture, make friends and make a difference. Opportunities are approved and arranged by the resident director. Successful past placements have included, but are not limited to:

The local Red Cross charity shop
The Carmarthen Learning Centre - assisting a wide range of individuals with learning disabilities.
Local Primary Schools - observation and assistance with class projects.
Dr. M's Youth Drop-in Centre - helping to staff a centre providing a "safe" environment for local young people.

2 SH. Available to all students. Prerequisite: Must have permission from the Spanish program director

The objective of the social service internship is to provide students with an opportunity to be exposed to a variety of realities and world views within the Spanish culture, while giving students an opportunity to "give something back" to their host city.
