1999-2000 Term Dates
Fall 1999 Semester: 1 September 1999 - 18 December 1999
Spring 2000 Semester: 25 January 2000 - 20 May 2000
There are two fifteen-week semesters at the Leiden University (The Netherlands). Typically, the semesters run from early September through mid December (fall semester) and early February through mid June (spring semester). Participants in the Brockport/Leiden University (The Netherlands) Program may enroll for the fall, spring or for the full academic year.
The SUNY Brockport Program at the University of Leiden is a one semester or full-year program offered in both the Fall and Spring semesters. Designed primarily for upper-division (junior/senior year) students matriculated at American colleges and universities, this SUNY Overseas Academic Program provides the opportunity for undergraduates to spend a portion of their academic careers as students at this Dutch university.
The SUNY Brockport Leiden Program allows American undergraduates to become, for their semester or year of participation, actual University of Leiden undergraduates--to attend the same classes, to live in the same housing, to participate in the same social, cultural, athletic, and academic extracurricular activities as their Dutch counterparts. This program seeks to fully integrate American students into this Dutch university for a semester or a year.
Leiden University
is known for the high quality of the
education and research facilities provided. The University
libraries contain 3 million books and periodicals, including a
unique collection of old manuscripts and maps. The
University also houses an elaborate collection of prints and
drawings, and there is an extensive collection of plants
and herbs in the botanical gardens and the national herbarium.
An industrial Bio-Science Park is associated with
Leiden University.
Apart from the regular study programs, which are mainly Dutch spoken, Leiden University has educational programs, taught in English, which are specifically designed with foreign students in mind. Special programs have been designed for undergraduate students who wish to study in Leiden for a period of time, to broaden their horizons.
Leiden is a picturesque town with 114,000 inhabitants, close to Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague. Public transport facilities are excellent. Since Leiden is a small town, all University buildings are within walking or cycling distance. Because of the safe environment and the individual approach, students tend to feel at home fairly quickly.

Participants in the Brockport/Leiden University (The Netherlands) Program will select (prior to departure) three courses available to study abroad students at Leiden University. All instruction in the Brockport/Leiden University (The Netherlands) Program is by Leiden University (The Netherlands) faculty.
Participants in the Brockport/Leiden University (The Netherlands) Program are examined in the same manner (and to the same standard) as their Dutch counterparts and classmates. The majority of courses in which they will enroll are examined formally at the end of the semester and in order to be awarded credit, participants must take--and pass--the examination at the end of the study period in question.
Although most excursions are included as part of the courses,
students may opt to take part in all excursions in
order to gain as much from their stay in the Netherlands as
possible:
Participants in the Brockport/Leiden University (The Netherlands) Program will normally earn four or five credit hours for each course successfully completed at Leiden University (The Netherlands) for a maximum of sixteen credits per semester.
Prior to the first and second semesters, an introduction program will be organized for newcomers. This two-day program consists of a general introduction to the University, the City of Leiden, and the student societies. Leiden students will act as guides and introduce their international colleagues to sports, study and social events.
As with most Dutch universities, students in Leiden live in the town rather than on campus. Participants in Brockport's Program at Leiden University (The Netherlands) will be housed in a variety of buildings in town managed by Leiden University. Students generally have their own bed and sitting rooms, but share sanitary and kitchen facilities with others. The office has a number of rooms reserved especially for international students, and furnished rooms are also available. The University will, upon admission into a program, assist in finding suitable accommodation for all Brockport/Leiden University (The Netherlands) Program participants who complete and return housing preference forms to the Office of International Education at Brockport.
