Gateway P55C-200 FPC

The Toshiba Satellite Pro 430CDS stands out for two reasons: Not only Gateway 2000 is betting that the MMX Pentium's big bang-for-the-buck ratio will appeal to families on a budget. After testing the Gateway P55C-200 FPC ($2,918 direct price), we'd say that the company wins the bet. In fact, the P55C-200's high-flying performance and great features impressed us so much that we gave it our Editors' Choice award in the home PC category.

Using components such as 512K of pipelined-burst L2 cache, 32MB of synchronous DRAM, and a 3.6GB Quantum hard disk, the P55C-200 led the home PC pack on most of our tests. Its most stunning result was on our Graphics WinMark 97 test suite: Powered by an STB Velocity 3D graphics engine, the system posted an astronomical score that put it 51 percent ahead of the nearest home PC competitor. Its Winstone 97 score was also number one among home PCs, and it led the group on our PhotoDeluxe and Kai's Power GOO applications tests.

The system's other peripherals include a 17-inchCrystalScan monitor, a 33.6/ 14.4-Kbps Telepath fax modem, and a PC ProPad 4 game pad. An Ensoniq Soundscape VIVO sound card and a set of Altec Lansing ACS-410 speakers supply the sound. A huge software bundle includes Microsoft Works and Money and many home-oriented titles.

The Pentium MMX-based Gateway P55C-200 FPC would be a great addition to any home or home office.
