Who can play.
| The tournament is open to the first 1,000 players with their own Game Boy system and either Pokémon Red or Pokémon Blue Game Paks. |
| Game Link Cables will be provided at the tournament so you can still compete even if you don't have your own. Tournament players must already know how to play the game. The tournament is open to everyone, but it is intended for kids between ages 7-14. |
| There are three tournament classes you can compete in. |
What you earn.

Basic rules for all tournaments.
| You may not use any Pokémon that have been altered or boosted by any game-enhancing devices. Doing this may result in game program malfunction and will result in your disqualification from the competition. |
|
Each tournament match will begin by players selecting six Pokémon and having them ready at the Pokémon Center (within your Game Boy game). These six Pokémon are then shown to the opponent.
In the Pika Cup, all Pokémon shown to an opponent must be between experience levels 15 and 20 and the sum of three Pokémon equals 50 or less.
In the Poke Cup, all Pokémon shown to an opponent must be between experience levels 50 and 55 and the sum of three Pokémon equals 155 or less.
In the Prime Cup, all Pokémon shown to an opponent may not be more than 100 (level 70 or higher is recommended) and the sum of three Pokémon equals 300 or less.
|
| From the six Pokémon you showed your opponent, you then select your own three Pokémon to do battle. Do not show these three Pokémon to your opponent. (Hint: pick your three Pokémon based on what your opponent has shown you as his or her possible Pokémon). Deposit the remaining three unused Pokémon in your PC (in your Game Boy game). |
Rules of battle: If you break these rules, you will be disqualified from the tournament.
| Out of your opponent's three Pokémon, you may "Put To Sleep" or "Freeze" only one Pokémon at a time. (If you put one of your opponent's Pokémon to sleep, you may not put a second one to sleep while that one is still asleep. If you freeze one of your opponent's Pokémon, you may not freeze another one while that one is still frozen. However, one may be frozen and one may be put to sleep during the same period of time). |
| ou may not use the Technical Machines "selfdestruct" or "explosion" with your last Pokémon. |
