README.TXT - Documentation Supplement May 20, 1994 - Release 1.00 Hercules Stingray VL(tm) (S501) Hercules Stingray PCI(tm) (S801) Supplemental Drivers Diskette 1 for IBM OS/2 2.1 / OS/2 for Windows (Windows NT display drivers are on Supplemental Drivers Diskette 2) INSTALLATION: ------------- The OS/2 installation procedure is as follows. Steps 1 - 9 are required only for first time installation of the Stingray drivers. 1) Under the OS/2 desktop, select the "OS/2 System" icon and then select the "Command Prompts" folder. 2) Select either the OS/2 Window or OS/2 Full Screen icon. 3) From the OS/2 command prompt, type DSPINSTL. (For best results, close all seamless Windows and full screen applications before running DSPINSTL.) 4) Select "SuperVGA (SVGA)" from the list of available drivers and follow any prompts that DSPINSTL gives you. When DSPINSTL is completed, you will be returned to the command prompt. 5) Shut down OS/2 and reboot your system. 6) After OS/2 has rebooted, under the OS/2 desktop again select the "OS/2 System" icon and then select the "Command Prompts" folder. 7) Select an OS/2 Window (either Desktop or Full Screen). 8) Insert Supplemental Drivers Diskette 1 into the floppy drive (e.g. A:) 9) If the floppy drive is A: and OS/2 is installed on C:, type: A: [to log onto the A: drive] install.cmd a c (Substitute different drive letters on the command line if necessary. For help, just type "install.cmd" with no parameters.) This installs the driver files on the hard drive. 10) From the OS/2 command prompt, type DSPINSTL again. (For best results, close all seamless Windows and full screen applications before running DSPINSTL.) 11) Select "Primary Display" and click on OK. 12) Select "Advance Logic, Inc." from the driver selection menu. 13) Select "Install Using Defaults for Monitor Type" from the "Monitor Configuration/Selection Utility" menu. 14) You will be prompted for the Video Refresh Rate Selection Menu. IMPORTANT: If you are not sure of your monitor's maximum refresh rate, say "NO." Selecting a refresh rate not supported by your monitor could lock up the system (possibly requiring a reinstall of OS/2), damage your monitor, or both. If you select "YES," the AScanOS2 utility is invoked. AScanOS2 presents the scan rates available with Stingray. Consult your monitor documentation and select the scan rates accordingly. If you are not sure which scan rates to choose, select the lowest scan rates in each of the four columns. 15) Select your desired display resolution from the list of available resolutions. 16) You will be prompted for Supplemental Display Driver Diskettes 1 and 2. 17) When DSPINSTL is completed, shut down OS/2 and reboot your system. NOTE: Your Stingray Supplemental Display Driver Diskettes are shipped with volume labels DISP 1 and DISP 2. If you make a backup copy of your diskettes, use the DOS LABEL command to label the copies accordingly. If the Supplemental Display Driver Diskettes do not have the correct volume labels, installation will fail. Changing Resolutions -------------------- To change the display resolution or pixel depth (number of colors) at any time, follow steps 10 - 17. Known Limitations ----------------- The following limitations have been observed: - At the 1024x768x256 resolution, if you open "Colors" in the Control Panel under a Windows session, the Custom Color Selector may be displayed incorrectly. Use the right mouse button to invoke the refresh command. This will clear the screen. - A General Protection Fault (GPF) may occur when running the WinTach benchmark program under a seamless Windows session. - When running WinBench 3.11 under a seamless Windows session and choosing the "Advanced Tests" option, portions of dialog boxes and pull-down menus may be blank. This error does not occur in full screen Windows sessions. All of these symptoms have been observed on other video cards as well, and IBM has been notified. *** End of File ***
