December Winners! ═══ Oh, of all the months you picked to miss a meeting, you really missed something this time. We need to offer a big tip of the hat to Lotus Development Corporation for having one of their reps fly out from back east to demonstrate Ami Pro for OS/2. But that's not all he did. He was so impressed with our turnout and enthusiasm - he allowed not ONE, not TWO, not THREE, not even FOUR, but FIVE - can you count that high? FIVE copies of Ami Pro for OS/2 to be raffled off. And just about everyone walked out with something this night. Here's hoping I found most of those drawing slips.... Ami Pro 3.0 for OS/2 Dave Keefer Gary Glenn Randy Shimizu Len Schunadtsa(?) ??????? It's a little task, but it would help out tremendously and make sure I don't lose things in the shuffle. ═══ 1.1.4. January Meeting ═══ San Diego OS/2 User Group Thursday, January 20, 1993 7:00pm - 10:00pm Computer Associates Presents CA-Unicenter & CA-Realizer for OS/2 ═══ 1.1.5. Directions ═══ IBM Building 8845 University Center Lane San Diego, California 92122 Directions If you are coming from south of the UCSD area, take Interstate 5 north. Get off at the Nobel Drive exit right after the passing the Mormon temple. The IBM building will be immediately in front of you as you are stopped at the exit stop light. If you are coming from north of the UCSD area, take Interstate 5 south and get off at the La Jolla Village Drive exit. Then head east until you reach Lebon. Then take a right and continue until you reach Nobel. Take a right onto Nobel Drive and then continue until you see the IBM building on your right just before reaching Interstate 5 again. ═══ 1.1.6. Parking & Cost ═══ Parking Free, in the IBM parking lot. Cost As usual, a free meeting open to anyone interested in attending. ═══ 1.1.7. Calling For Information ═══ General Meeting Information Our group typically meets every third Thursday of the month. If you'd like to get more information on our meetings, call our voice information line at (619) 587-5955 to find out about any changes in meeting times, the topics for future meetings, and a list of some San Diego area bulletin boards you can call for more OS/2 information. ═══ 1.1.8. Subscription Information ═══ Interested in Subscribing? We're looking into offering subscriptions to the printed version of the San Diego OS/2 Newsletter. At the moment it appears we will be able to offer a $25 subscription for 12 issues of the newsletter mailed to addressed in the United States. Overseas postage would be additional. Each issue would contain at least 20 pages of editorial content. We will probably start with the fall issues to get started with the subscription effort. This will allow us to reduce printing costs by having larger print runs of each issue as the initial group of subscribers sign up. As we've had a track record of putting out one printed newsletter each month since December 1992, we believe we can keep going at that rate after we've ramped up to a sufficient number of subscribers to make printing costs affordable for monthly issues. The INF and ASCII versions of the newsletter will probably be continued, but most likely they will trail the printed version by about one month. The printed version may also have advertising from OS/2 vendors. We think that the advertising would be of substantial benefit to OS/2 users as it is yet another way to find out about new OS/2 products. Moreover, it would help us fund additional pages for more articles and reviews. As far as advertising rates would go, we do not have anything determined yet but as our newsletter is targetted towards OS/2 users, it would be a valuable way for vendors of OS/2 products to reach an OS/2 audience. We would like to know what you think of our ideas and whether you'd be willing to subscribe or advertise in our newsletter. Can you tell me when does the new SD User Group Newsletter will be released? We really love this thing - because the one and only OS/2 mag here in germany is really lousy - and the subscription of OS/2 monthly is a little bit too expensive. Thanks for your reply. Bye/2 henning Craig told Henning that his guess was that we might have the October 1993 INF ready by mid-December and might get the November 1993 one done by the end of the year. Sorry to say, I've been heavily involved in the San Diego Computer Society's end of the year meeting so the next INF won't make it by mid-December as we'd hoped. I'm going home for Christmas and I know both sisters have a PC for me to crank away on code. Before the New Year holiday, you may see the rest of 1993 in INF format. From CompuServe October 23, 1993 Subject: Newsletter Subscription To: David G. Sichak, 74670,724 From: Samuel Weber, 72702,2216 "Hello from Paris! I just read the September issue of your newsletter and if it is not too later would like to encourage you to do a printed version of it. In that case, I would certainly subscribe. My situation is a bit complicated, since I am generally in Paris from July through December, and the rest of the year in L.A. (at UCLA). So if you would let me know where things stand in this regard, I would appreciate it. If you are already taking subscriptions, the only problem would be to calculate the extra (international) postage for the coming two months, since I will be back in L.A. as of January. I look forward to hearing from you." I'm a bit tardy with my reply. But yes, we already do a hard copy. Sure, you may have a "not so normal" situation, but one thing I believe in is giving a customer what (s)he wants - service. We'll work out something soon. BTW, please don't reply me now for I am leaving to Sri Lanka tomorrow for 3 weeks. Sometime early Jan '94 will be great. Thanks and Merry Christmas/2 Well, we're trying to do something about "organizing" right now. We've gotten too many requests to ignore. I will tell you this - it costs us 75 cents to mail each newsletter. I'll set me up a memo in Relish to pop you a reply in about 3 weeks and then mail you a couple to keep you from feeling homesick. BTW: What was with the suit at Comdex? Wasn't exactly "Geek-wear". Nice seeing you, though. Hope you had a good holiday trip. ═══ 1.2.6. James Smith ═══ Left San Diego, But Wants To Spread Our News.. From: James Smith (72134,3151) October 18, 1993 Original From: CompuServe Mail Subject: Viewing INF Newsletter Thanks for the fast reply. I feel silly for not remembering to add the working directory in the settings notebook. That did it. BTW, I posted a copy of the June .INF newsletter on a local BBS here. I found more OS/2 users in the area coming out of the closet. (Windows is VERY big here). I may try starting a local OS/2 user group here. The only one in Georgia that I know of is in Atlanta. There are no local user groups here in Macon. Vicci Conway is getting some things together for me. They are asking for more and I only have four or five months copies. Where in CompuServe did you say you loaded them? I don't want to pay the high phone bill to call the OS/2 Connection BBS. Sorry if you had a tough time reading this, it's past my bed time, so good night. Later, Jim Oh goodness. You wouldn't believe the problems I've had since your message. Luckily I did a print screen of one of them. The one with your address got wiped out when my hard drive decided to stage a work interruption on me. If you frequent CompuServe, we upload the newsletters to the IBM OS2 area in the OS/2 User Group Forum Library. Vicci Conway told me that she had moved the files from the TeamOS2 area. Come to think of it, I need to get your address again. If you need any advice starting a user group, I'm sure Craig and I could give you a few pounds of advice... ═══ 1.3. We'd like to figure out a way to "lock out" the use of the A: drive after OS/2 has come up from a software standpoint. It doesn't have to be a 100% fool proof solution, just a way to not allow a workstation user to load up their own programs from diskettes they bring in. Remove the following line from your CONFIG.SYS: BASEDEV=IBMxFLPY.ADD Where x is 1 for ISA and EISA, or 2 for Microchannel. ═══ 1.4.4. IBM Driver Support ═══ IBM Driver Support From: Lynn Nash Date: December 06, 1993 Origin: The Diamond Bar BBS (1:218/101) As you all know the subject of device drivers for OS/2 is a constant issue in this echo. Everyone has their own ideas about who is responsible and who's fault it is. The most definitive message that I have seen on IBM's viewpoint and support for new device drivers was posted on OS2BBS today Nov 9. I am posting it for all of you to use as ammunition when a vendors gives you the excuse that IBM will not help them produce drivers. P.S. OS/2 for windows (ferengi) was officially announced today with a $49 U.S. disk and $39 CD promo price. So the battle escalates again. Subject: OS/2 doomed to FAILURE if it is up to support! Modified by STEVEMAS at BCRVMPC1: Tracy, my group, Worldwide Industry Hardware Support, is part of the OS/2 Device Driver Development group. Our mission is to get device driver support for OS/2 2.x. Since IBM cannot write drivers for every peripheral device, we do rely on the hardware vendors to write them. We do not, however, leave them to do it on their own. Let me explain some of the efforts in progress to give you a better understanding of how we work with vendors. First, we're in touch with almost every device manufacturer about OS/2 support. This includes printers, plotters, parallel port attach drives, scanners (SCSI and non-SCSI), video, audio , non-SCSI CD-ROMs, Mwave, serial boards, PCMCIA modems, disks, flash RAM, data acquisition, MAC/NDIS, and dozens of others. Each evangelist is assigned a list of device classes and group of customers. We speak with them daily monitoring their progress. I'm a technical contact which these customers (that is IHVs and OEMs) can call for help. They dial directly to my phone in Boca, and have a resident "expert" on call. To these developers. We provide free copies of DDKs and tools, including documentation. We offer free classes in Boca for writing OS/2 device drivers for display drivers, ADDs, PDDs, VDDs and printer drivers. Our *free* driver support bulletin board is staffed by 9 full time people who have as their only responsibility to answer device driver developer's questions, which are tracked by number to insure follow-up. Customers do not have to have the DDK, or even be a DAP member. The service is free and open to anyone (call the DUDE. (407) 982-3217, N81. Our DDK just shipped version 1.1, with over 80 driver sources and test tools. The DDK also includes all of the on-line device driver documentation and excerpts from books and publications. Our next release will probably include a dozen more device driver sources, including PCMCIA socket services, client DD, Socket Services, Plug and Play. Pro Audio Spectrum, 32-bit S3 video and color printers. We offer exhibition of our vendor's products at major shows such as PC Expo, SD, Comdex, and others. Many of these will be at Comdex next week in Las Vegas. We offer a Logo program so adapter manufactures can affix the OS2 Ready! logo to their packaging. We support device driver developers via the Internet, IBM BBS, Bix, CompuServe, Prodigy and America Online. I speak at most major OS/2 events including the IBM Technical Interchanges, ColoradoOS/2, the IBM Device Driver Conference (next one on April 24-29) and OS/2 developer groups. I've written six articles for major publications on how to write OS/2 device drivers. We travel to every major trade show to speak with OEMs and IHVs, and to solicit their support. Are we doing enough? Probably not, but considering we didn't exist a year ago, we're managing to make quite a bit of difference. IBM does not have the resources to write hundreds of drivers for OS/2, nor do we have the resources to test every one of these drivers with every possible application. We rely on the vendors to do their part. If you're aware of someone we haven't spoken to, please let us know. We keep accurate lists of our OEMs and IHVs in a Notes database. In the PCMCIA category alone, we have over 100 vendors, and our list of video probably as long. We're adding more vendors daily, and always eager to speak with new ones. CPU Monitor Solution ═══ CPU Monitor Solution From: Ronald Van Iwaarden Date: November 22, 1993 Origin: The OS/2 Source BBS (1:104/338) MU> I hope someone can help me with this. This eventually causes a complete degradation of my OS/2 system, all programs becoming very slow, as the high priority Process IDs have been "trashed." Is there any way for OS/2 to maintain the Process IDs besides having a third-party program to manually edit the threads? Your machine should not become slow simply because processes have high PID numbers. The PID is simply an identifier of that program and has nothing to do with performance at all. For instance, download the program procs21 which will give a list of all running processes and their associated PID. Install From CD Without A CD-ROM ═══ Across the Land and Sea... Install From CD Without A CD-ROM From: Rj Friedman Date: November 17, 1993 To: John Herold Origin: World Data Exchange Taipei, Taiwan (6:720/921) JH> I don't have a CD-ROM drive. But I do have plenty of disk space to copy the umpty-ump installation diskettes to. Is there a way I can do an installation from my, say, I: drive instead of from the A: drive? Yes. I saw this just the other day from: Lloyd Rhodes ----- snip ----- The work-around was to copy the OS/2 installation diskettes onto an another partition of my hard drive and tell the OS/2 install program to read the files from the hard drive: 1. boot-up with DOS. 2. make sure you have about 25MB of free space somewhere on your hard drive -- in a partition that is *NOT* where OS/2 will reside. 3. create a \TEMP directory on the selected partition. 4. use XCOPY to copy all the diskettes to the new \TEMP directory. In my case, the partition was logical drive "H". Each diskette needs to be in its own directory under \TEMP. For example: XCOPY A:\*.* H:\TEMP\DISK_0 /S (for installation diskette) XCOPY A:\*.* H:\TEMP\DISK_1 /S (for diskette #1) XCOPY A:\*.* H:\TEMP\DISK_2 /S (for diskette #2) (repeat thru all diskettes) XCOPY A:\*.* H:\TEMP\DISP_1 /S (for display driver diskette 1) XCOPY A:\*.* H:\TEMP\DISP_2 /S (for display driver diskette 2) XCOPY A:\*.* H:\TEMP\PMDD_1 /S (for printer driver diskette 1) XCOPY A:\*.* H:\TEMP\PMDD_2 /S (for printer driver diskette 2) NOTE: When you use the above XCOPY command, XCOPY will ask you if the destination is a file (f) or a directory (d). Reply with "d" and it will create the directory for you. 5. *ONLY* *AFTER* you have done 1-4 above, insert diskette # 1 into drive A and modify a line in the CONFIG.SYS file. change: 'set os2_shell=sysins2.exe' (this is how the original looks) to: 'set os2_shell=sysins2.exe H:\TEMP\' (leave out the quotes) NOTE: Change the "H:" above to whatever partition was used for the XCOPY destination drive. 6. Use the installation diskette and diskette #1 to get the install started. From that point onward just follow the prompts. You will not have to insert anymore diskettes. ----- snip ----- ═══ 1.5. Ami Pro OS/2 - Solutions ═══ Ami Pro 3.0 for OS/2 Solutions To Some Problems Date: December 08, 1993 From: Mark Kusec Origin: S2S Gateway, Vancouver (1:153/764) I just talked with Lotus tech support and got some info on a few problems I, as well as others, have had. Some of these problems were solved by tech support, others by folks here on the net, others by me. So here goes: PROBLEM Having to double click on the Smarticons to activate. SOLUTION Not really a solution, but if you have your dragging mouse buttons reversed, i.e. button 1 is used instead of button 2, then you will have to double click on the icon. AP/2 is expecting you to drag the icon instead of activating it when you have your mouse mapped this way. Lotus is aware of the "problem" and hopefully a solution will be made available. If it really annoys you, just remap your mouse via the OS/2 mouse settings notebook. PROBLEM Drag and drop of files won't work with long file names SOLUTION AP/2 won't accept file names that have, at least in my case, dashes in the file name. It seems that HPFS will allow it, but AP/2 will not. I removed the dashes from my file names and the drag and drop worked fine. Lotus is aware of the problem. PROBLEM Drag and drop printing not functioning SOLUTION This functionality will only work within AP/2. For example, if you are working on a document and you minimize it *WITHIN* AP/2, you can then drag it to the printer. Nevertheless, it is just as easy to select "Print" from the "File" menu. It appears that drag and drop printing was pulled temporarily from the shipping product due to a nasty DLL that would not deinstall easily. This DLL also controls drag and drop printing using the AP/2 window control icon. Lotus is aware of the problem. PROBLEM The AP/2 file manager dies SOLUTION It appears that the file manager will not work properly on an when installed on an HPFS partition. If you install AP/2 on a FAT partition, then it should work. PROBLEM Background printing doesn't work SOLUTION Sorry folks, haven't got a solution to this one because I forgot to ask them about it. Hopefully I can have an answer in a few days. PROBLEM AP/2 runs deathly slow and is forever swapping to disk. SOLUTION Thanks to Todd Green of Team OS/2 for this one. Increasing your initial swap file size to 8MB clears up a lot of the speed problems. AP/2 performs much faster on my 16MB machine now that I did that. My CONFIG.SYS SWAPPATH statement looks like so: SWAPPATH=c:\ 2048 8192 Also, I've heard that putting your swapfile in the drive's root directory speeds things up. Give it a try. ═══ 1.5.2. It is remarkable how much interest there is in OS/2 here in the Northwest. We have a new SIG President, a newsletter crew, a Secretary, and an Events Coordinator. The details follow: We approved Ward Kaatz (p. Cotz) as President, Paul Abbot will ramrod the newsletter, Dan Nash will help, Mark Selleck will serve as the Events Coordinator, and John Farnsworth graciously accepted the role of Secretary. I will continue to busy my self with the OS/2 Northwest BBS which is a truly full-time job. We discussed the goals for the SIG, the responsibilities of those who have accepted the task of officiating, and some interest areas for the newsletter. Also discussed were vendor ties we could expect, and the kinds of software we were interested in. Interest in Team OS/2 is very high, and is also very needed in this particular corner of the land! Mark Selleck of IBM gave us a trip report from his tour of Comdex -- it sounded both interesting and frenetic, and I guess those attending Comdex know just what that means! It was good news to hear that OS/2 for the second year running won the "Best of Operating Systems" award, and that OS/2 more than held its place in drawing crowds. Mark also verified the report that Word Perfect is cutting support of OS/2 in the next release of Word Perfect. It is a shame to lose them, but I applaud them for the effort they made and the example they set with their current OS/2 product. Perhaps they will be back. The second half of the meeting was spent watching the HAL "Shoot-out" featuring David Barnes. That man is some salesman. It is very fortunate for IBM and OS/2 users that we have that kind of talent behind us. His fast-paced presentation was dramatic and informative. His delivery sets the standard for informative, narrative filled, multimedia showmanship. I am not at all surprised that the NT portion of the show has been banned by Microsoft -- we didn't see it because it would not be politically correct, but David's class and style are a formidable combination and it is easy to imagine what must have been going through the MS presenter's mind. We ran out of time and were not able to show the locally televised show organized and hosted by our own George Byrne. The "Computer Room", taped in Seattle, may be a first for computer SIGs. George plans to feature computer software, hardware, and computer people -- and they better be capable of running in OS/2 because that is the OS around which his show is based. As a guest, I presented my BBS, with a live on-line demo. The user base here picked up dramatically in the days following the show so we definitely got the word out. Mark Selleck of IBM followed with a nice demonstration of OS/2's multimedia capability and DOS and Windows support. The control room staff in the studio had not seen OS/2 run and they were very impressed. Don Murray followed with a computer games segment featuring a sound-rich game, "Return to Zork" which was humorous and also remarkable for its graphics and sound quality. It was also a heck of a lot of fun. Thanks to all who braved the icy blasts of cold Canadian weather to make it to the SIG. Our next meeting will be Dec. 14, and every second Tuesday of the month thereafter. If you are in the Seattle area at those times make it a point to drop in to the meetings. The meeting place has been changed to the IBM office building, downtown Seattle and University and 5th Avenue. That is adjacent to Benihana's restaurant for you locals. Traffic in Las Vegas was about as frustrating as a Windows GP Fault. The booths were all bustling with activity, but the biggest crowds were at the IBM PC Company booth. Gallagher, the comedian, was there to smash watermelons and make jokes about computers and attendees. Meanwhile, TEAM OS/2 was busier than ever. We assembled several hours before the show opened, and quickly covered the show floor making sure all the vendors were ready to go. We kept busy the entire day, and then kicked into high-gear after the show. 25 teams visited booths to install OS/2 after the show closed for the day, and we made more appointments for tomorrow. TEAM OS/2 is really making a difference. We've helped vendors find demoware, we've repaired hardware, and we even helped one vendor get his program running under DOS (once that worked, we were ready to convert it to OS/2). The volunteers are all doing a FANTASTIC job, doing more than we could ever expect. This effort is a credit to the dedication of the volunteers. My thanks go out to everyone. We're ready for day two, and I'll post another report (if I survive) tomorrow. ═══ 1.6.8. Teamos2 - Comdex II ═══ COMDEX DAY 2 From: Keith Wood Subj: Comdex - Tuesday Conf: Teamos2 Tuesday, Nov 16, 1993 From: Bill Laird Origin: BRASS CANNON PAT_HENRY*AEN*TEAM OS/2 602-639-1039 (1:15/29) Today was another eventful day for Team OS/2 at Comdex. As we approach the half-way point of the show, response to Team OS/2 offerings of support and installation has been overwhelming. We are seeing a lot of new interest as the show progresses, and Comdex attendees continue to assault vendors with OS/2 inquiries. Even in our third day here, teamers continued to assist in the setting up of previously unplanned OS/2 demonstrations. We had a lot of energizing experiences today, as vendors reported back to us the feedback they received while demonstrating their products under OS/2. Terrance Aibib, customer support manager for ATI technologies, came into Team OS/2 Headquarters to personally thank us for setting up a demo of their Graphics Ultra + video card under OS/2. Mr. Aibib reported there were a lot of heads turning in amazement at the four MMPM/2 sessions running concurrently on the OS/2 desktop. He even wanted us to document what we did so that they could be prepared to duplicate this presentation at other trade shows! This kind of attitude has been prevelant: vendors are very pleased with the assistance we have provided, and we have established hundreds of leads for next year's show. Teamers and other OS/2 enthusiasts from all over the globe have been pouring into our headquarters to say hello, offer assistance, and inquire about what they can do to help spread the word. Needless to say, by the time they leave, they have a display of OS/2 stickers and pins on their Comdex badges that would rival a 5-star general. Not leaving any stone unturned, two Team OS/2 members were interviewed by OS/2 Magazine as they installed OS/2 for Windows at the Viewsonic demo. Be looking for all the details in an upcoming edition. ═══ 1.6.9. Teamos2 - Comdex III ═══ COMDEX TEAMOS2 Invasion From: Keith Wood Subj: Comdex Press Release Conference: Teamos2 November 17, 1993 Origin: BRASS CANNON | PAT_HENRY*AEN*TEAM OS/2 602-639-1039 (1:15/29) Something unusual has been happening at computer meets and trade shows, including COMDEX Fall 93. "Flying squads" have been roaming the aisles, helping exhibitors install and configure their systems with IBM's OS/2 2.1 operating system, answering questions, supplying brag materials and coordinating for future shows. This isn't the "unusual" part, however. Many companies send their staffs out to help display their products. What's so unusual is that of the 50-plus men and women in the salmon-colored shirts running around, only ONE of them is paid by IBM to be here. The rest are VOLUNTEERS, members of "Team OS/2". Team OS/2 is a loosely-organized association of OS/2 users who are spreading the word about what they see as "the" platform for desktop computing. And they are doing it with only minor recognition by IBM. OS/2 marketing "top gun" David Barnes publicly recognizes Team OS/2 in public demonstrations, telling audiences that the success of the 32-bit operating system "was NOT because of IBM's incredible marketing skill!" Team OS/2 members at COMDEX Fall 93 came from as near as Las Vegas and as far as eastern Canada, on their own time and money, converging after the word went out across computer BBS networks that they could be useful. Since Sunday, Teamers have contacted several hundred vendors to follow up on interest or to provide "guru-on-site" support. The cellular "Hot Line" got a workout during the first several days of the show, and it was mid-week before anyone had a chance to relax, just in time for a special "thank-you" gathering sponsored by IBM on Wednesday afternoon. When asked what motivates someone to give up their COMDEX time or vacation to Team OS/2, one Teamer responded: "I want vendors to write for OS/2. They won't do that unless we keep OS/2 visible and show them how users who visit the booths are interested." Other Teamers were less serious in their responses, simply saying "We do this because it's fun!" Their activities seem to be paying off -- OS/2 is gathering market share, especially following Team presentations given at computer clubs and stores. One Teamer, a rural computer reseller, made a 250-mile round trip to promote OS/2 at a "nearby" CompUSA store. "They're my competition, but they sell a lot of OS/2, and that's good for my business in the long run." He also added that "I'm seeing a lot of the same sort of comments flying back and forth that I saw when I moved to DOS, and my competitors stayed with CP/M. I'm still around, and they're long gone." IBM doesn't seem to understand the enthusiasm Teamers have for the product, but they have ed Janet Gobeille as corporate liaison to the thousands of Team OS/2 members, and Kathy Fanning to funnel demo and literature bundles to OS/2 user groups and SIGs. In recognition for their efforts, IBM has sponsored a Thursday-evening gathering for those Teamers from around the world who give up their time to promote "the only desktop operating system worth using." ═══ 1.7. By doing so, I can more readily make sure we have currently available public information and update the list easier, too. On top of that, I can use the "report" feature to creat the code I need to create the INF version. Clever, eh? We publish only information that has been published in: Fidonet, CompuServe, Internet & Issue 1 of IBM's "Personal Software" newsletter, which listed OS/2 user groups. I have also been lucky enough to stumble upon a good number of newsletters by attending Comdex and APCUG events. I pulled additional information when I found it from these publications. The list also provides interested OS/2 vendors with a handy, easy way to target potential future presentations of their products. I've got these meetings listed in a calendar format in our hard copy. In a future INF version, I may figure out how to do that, too. We try to list known OS/2 User Groups whenever we get the information. Of course, we can't be responsible if the information proves to be unreliable -- you, the reader are our best source of this information. ═══ 1.7.2. That's at the northeast corner of LBJ (Interstate 635) and Luna Road, a short distance west of the intersection of LBJ and Stemmons Freeway (Interstate 35). Again, our host is One Up Corporation -- the first meeting at this site was October 7 and the facilities are very nice. We had been meeting at American Airlines, near the DFW Airport, since May, 1992. The preliminary agenda is: MAGEC -- an application generator from MAGEC Software. A member of the group (from the City of Dallas) recommended this outfit's goods a few months ago with high praise. MAGEC's representative called today (October 20) to cancel their demo due to personal problems/commitments that had to be met. We are working on a replacement -- suggestions are welcome. I think a phone call would be best (rather than a response to this CFORUM) if "locals" have any good leads. Sorry -- we'll come up with something good! Several applications developed/marketed by One Up. Membership is "informal" -- just show up and sign up. There are no dues and no fees, which vastly simplifies administration of this group (don't have to register with the Internal Revenue Service as a "non profit" organization is the immediate benefit). It is remarkable how much interest there is in OS/2 here in the Northwest. We have a new SIG President, a newsletter crew, a Secretary, and an Events Cooridinator. Also discussed were vendor activities we could expect, and the kinds of software we were interested in. His delivery sets the standard for informative, narative filled, multi-media showmanship. Mark Selleck of IBM followed with a nice demonstration of OS/2's multi-media capability and DOS and Windows support. The control room staff in the studio had not seen OS/2 run and they were very impressed. Don Murray followed with a computer games seg- ment featuring a sound-rich game, "Return to Zork" which was humoruous and also remarkable for its graphics and sound quality. That is adjacent to Beni Hanna's restaurant for you locals. Restoring Columbus Documents ═══ OS/2 Real-World Solutions OS/2 & LAN Server Sail To Restore Columbus Documents From: Steve Gallagher Date: December 07, 1993 Origin: Orphan Board West (1:202/723) [Thanks to Steve for passing along the three following articles.] In Spain's Archivo General de Indias, nine million pages of documents on the history of the Discovery of the New World and Spanish administration in America reside on a computerized information system running OS/2 Version 2.1 and LAN Server 3.0. The OS/2-based archive makes it possible to access the 15th-19th century documents very easily and handle them digitally so they do not deteriorate. In addition, image-processing tools under OS/2 are used to "clean" deteriorated documents, which would otherwise be unreadable, so they can be displayed clearly on PC screens. Here's how it works: A researcher enters search text into a database, which lists related documents found. The researcher selects a document. A corresponding message is sent over the network to an image-storage system, where the document, which was previously digitized and stored in optical disks, is sent to the researcher's workstation, decompressed, then loaded into RAM memory so it can be displayed on the screen. All that happens smoothly and without delay. That's because the system is putting OS/2's multitasking capabilities to work. In addition to its multitasking benefits, OS/2 provides other capabilities for the archive system. The uncompressed file size of each image is around 1 megabyte. OS/2's high-power memory management scheme is needed to load the images quickly, especially when several pages have to be loaded in RAM simultaneously. To keep everything running smoothly, OS/2's Communications Manager handles the dialogue between the AS/400 database server and the PS/2 client workstations. It's no wonder why thousands of researchers and archivists from around the world use the automated archive each year and help fill the 70-seat research room daily. Once an image of a document is displayed in front of them, researchers can manipulate the image through enlargement, rotation, contrast, and even remove bleeding-ink stains. When they find the document they need, they can print it on a laser printer. The system has been jointly designed and developed by the Spanish Ministry of Culture, IBM Spain, and the Ramon Areces Foundation. If you are interested in managing your volumes of information better, or would like more information about this OS/2 & LAN Server solution, contact Julian Bescos, Proyecto Indias, Apartado 179, 28080 Madrid, Spain, or fax to number 34-1-7351440. ═══ 1.8.2. OS/2 and Fireman's Fund ═══ OS/2 and Fireman's Fund To Your Rescue From: Steve Gallagher Date: December 07, 1993 Origin: Orphan Board West (1:202/723) When it comes to property and casualty insurance, everything is critical and you can't take any chances. That's why Fireman's Fund Insurance develops and runs its mission-critical software applications on OS/2. Internally, Fireman's Fund uses OS/2 to manage over 200 local area networks, connecting 2900 employees together. Mission-critical applications running under OS/2 at Fireman's Fund perform core business functions in the areas of commercial and personal insurance, claims processing, and the processing of specialized areas such as excess liability. The implementation of these OS/2 applications allows Fireman's Fund to provide better service and process claims faster. During the Oakland California Fire catastrophe of 1991, for example, employees at Fireman's Fund built a complete claims adjusting database with Lotus Notes and OS/2 to manage and track the onslaught of customer transactions. In just 24 hours, the company set up workstations in hotel rooms, where they were able to process claims adjustments immediately. Without the multitasking and communications capabilities of OS/2, it would have been impossible for the company to handle the volumes of information as efficiently, or with as much data integrity, as they did. These OS/2-related efficiencies are being realized throughout the company; in addition, the Systems organization at Fireman's Fund has realized a 30% reduction in direct expenses over the past four years during which time the OS/2 applications were implemented. So when you think about your insurance needs in the future, think about which system you'd trust with your claims. Then remember Fireman's Fund and OS/2. For more information about Fireman's Fund and OS/2, contact Virgil Pittman of Fireman's Fund Insurance Company, 415-492-6587. ═══ 1.8.3. Energy Boost at Mobil Natural Gas ═══ OS/2 Provides Energy Boost at Mobil Natural Gas From: Steve Gallagher Date: December 07, 1993 Origin: Orphan Board West (1:202/723) AUSTIN, TEXAS, DEC. 6, 1993: IBM's award-winning OS/2* PC operating system is helping Mobil Natural Gas respond to, and stay ahead of, changing business conditions in the energy field. "The business unit is responsible for the sales and delivery of natural gas from the wellhead to the burner tip," said Art Wengler, team leader, technology group, Mobil Natural Gas. "In partnership with our vendors, we've developed a mission-critical line of business applications for marketing natural gas." The Information Systems Group has responsibility for developing the computer systems that market Mobil's natural gas supply in Canada and the United States -- "everything from order entry systems to capture the sales order, matching them with the supplies of gas and then moving the gas through the various pipelines to our customers in the most cost effective manner," he said. Like many businesses, Mobil Natural Gas has been rightsizing from host-based systems to a client/server environment. "We have a new generation of product and needed the power and reliability of OS/2 to run multiple applications on the desktop simultaneously," Wengler said. To handle the type of programming and applications that Mobil Natural Gas needs, intense, complex transactions must be run against the database. "We need to manipulate data, and OS/2 combined with IBM's Distributed Relational Database Architecture product has helped us do that," said Wengler. "When we started out, we had 'dumb' terminals connected to mainframes. We wanted to leverage our investment in PCs by moving the application logic from the mainframe to the workstation. OS/2 helped us gain control of the problem locally. "Additionally, the innovative Workplace Shell graphical user interface helped tremendously," said Wengler. "Our training needs have been greatly reduced." But what OS/2 has really done is help the company attain its strategic goals. "Our mission here at Mobil Natural Gas is to be the supplier of choice," said Wengler. "We have chosen to do that by combining talent, teamwork and technology. And the technology we're committed to is OS/2." * Indicates trademark or registered trademark of the International Business Machines Corporation. ═══ 1.8.4. On Notes Software From: Gautam Srikanth Date: December 13, 1993 Origin: (1:141/270) The Lotus Development Corporation's stock rose yesterday on an analyst's report that the company had renegotiated a little-known, two-year-old agreement with IBM that required Lotus to turn over as much as one-third of its revenues from its hot-selling Notes software... A source close to Lotus confirmed that Lotus would keep all revenues from Notes sales under the new agreement. Previously, IBM got one-third of Notes revenues, because IBM helped finance the software's development... [Read This!! -->] In exchange for the new Lotus agreement, the company has agreed to step up development of its applications for IBM's OS/2 operating system, specifically of Smart Suite announced at the recent Comdex show in Las Vegas. This group of programs comprises of Lotus 1-2-3, Ami Pro, Freelance Graphics, and cc:Mail. Lotus has agreed to bring its OS/2 versions of these applications up to par with the Windows versions of the same products and then allow IBM to sell them normally. Lotus will receive royalties from the OS/2 applications sales. IBM Banking on OS/2 IBM is banking heavily on the success of OS/2, which can be assured only if desktop applications are available to users. Mr. Quinn said that the old Lotus agreement came about when IBM canceled its own software development project called Office Vision and agreed to recommend Notes instead and to sell the product through its direct sales force. GS> Okay! Some good news from Lotus. When 1-2-3 and Freelance will be updated to the Windows functionality... I don't know. REXXBase 1.10 - New Beta ═══ New Beta Release For REXXBase 1.10 From: Joe Mcverry Date: November 20, 1993 Origin: Orphan Board West (1:202/723) For Immediate Release American Coders Ltd. has released the 1.10 (beta) version of its product RexxBase. RexxBase is an OS/2 DLL that allows REXX command procedures to process dBase files. The program provides access to dBase data files and memo files sequentially and through indexes. By using OS/2's flat memory address space, multithreading capabilities and file sharing facilities RexxBase offers dBase file functionality unavailable in the DOS environment. American Coders is targeting the product at OS/2 application developers, programmers and users. This includes users of VX/REXX, VisPro/REXX and REXX command procedures. RexxBase requires OS/2 2.0 or better and .5 megabytes of disk space. The program supports both FAT and HPFS file formats. Since RexxBase uses the REXX interface API there are special considerations required for REXX routines. American Coders is selling RexxBase for $49.00. There is also a $15.00 shipping and handling fee. American Coders distributes the product through shareware channels. Interested parties may obtain the shareware version from American Coders for $15.00, which will cover the cost of the shipping and handling when they register their copy. The shareware version of the product comes with on-line documentation. Registered users will receive printed documentation, 30 days money back guarantee, 60 days of telephone support, and a free upgrade to the general release version of the product. January 30, 1994 is the target date for the general release. ═══ 1.8.8. Now It Can Be Told ═══ Now It Can Be Told From: James Himmelman Date: November 27, 1993 Origin: Utopia Tech (1:107/203.1) Now It Can Be Told ... The following message was posted in the WordPerfect Echo by Bob Germer, who is the Echo Moderator (I think) and who has extensive contacts within the Wordperfect Corporation: Sadly, it is true that WP has cancelled development of 6.0 for OS/2. I had a long talk (more than an hour on my dime) with two different people well up in the organization. It seems that WordPerfect went to IBM and asked for development money to continue development of the product. IBM declined. So, WPC decided to abandon the operating system. I got the usual corporate pap about cost of development vs. potential market, etc. at first, but when I got up to the executive level, I got more truth than pap. It seems that WPC made a bad move with its 5.1 for Windows which costa bundle in free upgrades to 5.2 for Windows which wasn't much better. That forced a crash effort to release 6.0 which is slower yet than 5.2 and just as buggy. (Can you say UAE?) In the process, WPC lost much of its market share, especially in the Windows area. Also, they are firmly entrenched in the "my word processor can do more than your word processor" wars with Microsoft et al. There are definitely signs that WP is hurting for cash. They are farming out technical support and clear signs point to abandonment of toll free support in the near term future. All support for some platforms has been abandoned with more evidently to come. I pointed out to these folks that not everyone wants or needs all the bells and whistles of a 6.0. Many would prefer the speed of 5.1 and that 5.1 should still be marketed. That was seen as a strange idea since 6.0 "is so much more feature laden". I asked about the moral responsibility WPC had to those OS/2 users who received brochures, press releases, etc. regarding 6.0 for OS/2, OS/2 Office, etc. and who delayed upgrading their software waiting for the native release. I was told that the bottom line was more important! It seems that WP sales have dropped rapidly since the 5.1 Windows release with WPWIN (all versions) lagging behind other products. They complained bitterly that with MicroSoft providing Word for Windows to bundlers for as little as $10 per copy, they had to devote their "limited resources" to keeping market share and couldn't afford the development costs associated with multiple platform support. Not only is OS/2 being abandoned but development of the Unix, Vax, and other operating systems as well from what I gather. They admitted that they have lost several major financial accounts to Ami Pro or Describe inasmuch as OS/2 has made vast inroads in the banking community. I asked if they had noticed the same trend in the insurance industry and got a half hearted admission that they had lost an account or two. I asked if they realized that Novell based networks cannot run WindowsNT and that this has pushed many mid-sized companies toward OS/2 for their high end machines. I was told that they were aware of that but felt that people would drop Novell for other LAN platforms so they could continue to run Windows rather than switch from DOS to OS/2. I asked what they thought would happen when the Taligent project reaches market in mid-1994 with its multi-platform operating system capable of running on Intel, Motorola, and RISC hardware with a common kernel and interface all based on the OS/2 kernel. The answer was "hopefully Windows will be supported on those platforms". It also seems that several people active in the development and marketing of the OS/2 products have been summarily fired. WPC won't confirm this, but several people I knew either personally or via phone are no longer there, all at once! The overall impression I gleaned was that of a company in serious financial difficulty with no clear vision or planning beyond the next quarter. I got the clear impression that WPC was in turmoil internally with more than a handful of long time employees "pursuing other career objectives". The bottom line is that for the first time in 11 years, I will be looking seriously at competitive products. As much as I love WP, I want and need native support for my operating system. The horrid 5.2 port is not satisfactory. I am not a happy camper. <<< End of Bob Germer Message >>> ═══ 1.9.2. One If By Fax... ═══ One If By Fax, Two If By E-mail ... I am currently using WP 5.1 for DOS in my OS/2 environment. Works fine but I was anxiously awaiting the release of WP 6.0 for OS/2. This announcement is a great disappointment. CS> I spoke with a gentleman by the name of Lee. He told me that the developers have been reassigned to other work and that the development of WP 6.0 for OS/2 is only on hold, it has not been totally scrapped. The other work is making their Windoze products work better in an OS/2 environment. I talked to Lee also, on Tuesday afternoon. I told him that I was fortunate to see the announcement when I did (Mon. 11/15) since my credit card starts its new billing period on the 16th and I was planning to order WPOS2 5.2 on the 16th. I also mentioned that I had decided not to go WP 6.0 for DOS and then "EZ Move" to OS/2 later because I wanted to have the OS/2 version manuals from the start. I pointed out that the WP 6.0 for DOS with a planned EZ move to OS/2 had been a popular technique with others on the nets and that's why I had considered it. When he asked for my phone number, I gave it to him and told him that Troy Money in OS/2 Marketing (for WP) would have my name, number and address since I have been working with him on having WP show their OS/2 wares at the upcoming CompUSA OS/2 Day. CS> The reason for this move is that WP Corp. does not see the demand necessary to continue the development for OS/2. If you have any feelings about this decision, IT IS IMPORTANT TO MAKE THE CALL AND GO ON RECORD!!! After all, it is a free call. Sure is important. If they don't here from the OS/2 market, it doesn't exist. I told him how I responded to their "Suite Partner", Borland, when they last tried to sell me an upgrade to their Windows product, which is basically: 1. I don't need any more DOS/Windows products; 2. I paid for a 386 class machine (a 486, actually) and want to use it to its fullest; 3. I'm using OS/2 to that end, not to maintain compatibility with the past (How many Mac owners ask for updated versions of Apple II software?); 4. My goal is to remove the DOS/Windows modules from my OS/2 machine as soon as I have native apps for all my work. The vendors that meet that need will meet my dollars. ═══ 1.9.5. From: Christopher Petro Subj: WordPerfect and OS/2: Conference: Teamos2 Origin: GREATER CHICAGO Online!! 708-895-4042 (1:115/895) Concerning Word Perfect for OS/2: I have used several word processors in my college career (5+ years and still no degree) and have not been impressed with many. This include WP. That said, If Word Perfect feels that OS/2 is not worth supporting, let them go by the wayside. That is what Free Market Economics/Capitalism is all about right? What I would like to see is a port of T-makers Right Now for OS/2. That is a good program. Unfortunately it only exists on the Mac, and the NeXT machines, and (this is what complicates the port) is written (supposedly) in Machine language. It is small, fast, and has all of the features that a word processor needs. unlike some of the ridiculous bloatware that is being sold today. I have used WP 5.1 and 6.0 for dos, and I am still waiting to be impressed. This is far more polite than I would put it vis-a-vis. I would say:" If they don't support the most advanced OS usable on a PC ... 'em". But I'm not supposed to say things like that on the BBS so, I guess I won't. ═══ 1.9.6. OS/2 Professional: New Goals ═══ OS/2 Professional -- New Goals Original Area: comp.os.os2.advocacy Original From: Kent H Lundberg (1:202/723) Originally_From: klund@athena.mit.edu Last night, at the Boston Computer Society OS/2 Users Group, Edwin Black, Publisher of OS/2 Professional, announced that his magazine is cutting their circulation from 200,000 to 100,000, and is abandoning the "end user/single user" market. According to him, only 10% of OS/2's "4.5 million" [his figure] worldwide sales are in the "SOHO" (small office, home office) category. This number, and its present growth rate, are not enough to support his magazine, and is not enough to support the marketing of OS/2 native apps to end users. Instead, he will change focus to MIS and the corporate world, where companies buy 100-1000 copies (of OS/2 and native software) at a time. He spoke at length how OS/2's DOS and Windows compatibility made OS/2 development "unnecessary" and how he, personally, uses no OS/2 native software (although he uses OS/2 "all day long, with 15-20 windows open". Although he did stop short of calling it a "dead-end", I think that this decision may be as discouraging to the OS/2 world as the recent WP 6.0 fiasco. I didn't like his magazine much, but I am sorry to see it leave the SOHO market. The newsstand presence alone is important to OS/2. The "computer geeks" in the SOHO market are why OS/2 still exists. David Barnes recognizes this and credits us with believing in OS/2 and keeping it alive (despite IBM marketing ineptitude). I hope OS/2 Professional soon realizes that this move is a fatal mistake. OS/2's Dismal Advertising ═══ OS/2's Dismal Advertising From: Mark Woolworth Date: November 21, 1993 Origin: The Choice BBS (1:209/710) Toby Bell wrote in a message to All: TB> What really annoys me is the lackluster advertising campaign carried on by IBM for OS/2. The adds have terrible graphics in magazines if you can ever find any OS/2 adds at all. All magazines have DOS tips Windows tips but no OS/2 tips. The stores never have any OS/2 applications in stock and don't express any interest in carrying them. The TV has Windows adds every 20 or 30 minutes never have I heard OS/2 even mentioned on television at all. I haven't seen one new OS/2 application product announcement in PC MAG ever, nor have I seen an OS/2 application mentioned in shootout style comparisons of Word Processors, Spreadsheets or Databases. It all depends on your area, apparently. What you are saying was true for nearly all of us about 6-12 months ago. But now all of the major stores in this area are now carrying OS/2, and even have OS/2 apps available. With OS/2 passing the 3,000,000 copies sold next month, everyone is going to have to take another serious look at their decisions on supporting OS/2. As for ads, be patient. At Comdex, IBM showed us a series of ads they have put together that will be appearing on TV soon, and some of them are great! At least they had us (the 1000 or so people watching) nearly rolling around on the floor. They are al so preparing a whole new series of ads just for the Fiesta Bowl this year, and each of these will be used to get a simple point across to the viewer. A whole new approach when compared to last year. David Barnes stated that not everything is in place yet, but they are already putting out better ads, in more places, and that this will continue to get better and better, and be more and more visible. IBM has also set the price of OS/2 FOR WINDOWS really low, and expect it to be a HUGE seller. At $49 for floppy and $39 for CD versions (suggested retail), I think you can see that they are priced VERY aggressively. I have already heard that the floppy versions are selling in San Diego stores for just $39!! And IBM has finally realized that technology ALONE doesn't sell, but good advertising can and will make it sale. So they are now re- doing all of their ad campaigns. Some of the new ones show you the difference between Windows under DOS and Windows under OS/2. Others toss in a few points here and there about why OS/2 is better than Windows, while making Windows better at the same time. The best ones they showed us was a series of scenes with IBM's hilarious David Barnes and some customers demonstrating a Windows under Dos system rendering a drawing while the user TRIED to use a word processor. It was many words behind in displaying what had been typed, because of the cooperative multitasking, and then they showed the same two programs in Windows under OS/2 and the word processor was showing each keystroke as it was typed. A major improvement which was clearly visible on the screen. It didn't hurt any that David was asking the customers what they thought about the usability of the DOS vs. OS/2 versions, and everyone was in agreement that OS/2 was clearly a better product. The ads also press the fact that OS/2 simply allows you to use "The other half of the machine you have already paid for", and "Its available now, not sometime in the future", plus several other points the average person should easily understand. Anyone seeing these ads should easily see the benefits that OS/2 can provide the average person. It also has not hurt any that Windows NT has been a major FLOP. Sales of OS/2 have skyrocketed since NT was released. And this is being reported all over the country, not just in isolated areas. Heck, even MicroSoft downplayed NT at Comdex. Last year all you heard was NT this and NT that. This year you had to look for anything NT. It was there, but clearly not pushed as much as it was last year. Tons of new OS/2 applications are also arriving now. I could not believe all the new things I found for OS/2 at Comdex. Everything from utilities to languages. People even acted like they knew what it was this year, unlike last year. New OS/2 magazines, books and fax services are also available now. Even Phillip Kahn (Borland CEO) showed up for a couple of minutes at the Team OS/2 party and announced that several more Borland products would be released for OS/2 during the next several months. He also stated that the Team OS/2 spirit was taking things back to when they used to be fun... ═══ 1.9.8. We are in the process of upgrading (slowly, the money thing) and trying to set up a plan for future. I am a dedicated OS/2 user, and have been since the release of 2.0, and I think that the Lab could benefit from the upgrade to 2.1 (or 2.2 if it is available soon.) but I need some more information. As I said earlier, the lab is a mixed environment, PC's and...You guessed it, Macs. I disremember hearing somewhere about OS/2 having appletalk built in? Currently we are running a Coactive parallel port network, (slow, cheap and easy) and it looks like that is going to remain constant for a little while. Connectivity is DEFINITELY one of my concerns. Another is in the area of Colors. We NEED TRUE COLOR. I have seen 16.7 mil. color drivers for the S-3 Video Cards, and right now we have 2 Diamond s-3 cards. I really don't have a problem using S-3 Cards, they seem to be as fast as any other, but I would like to know if any other Companies are going to offer drivers for other chipsets, and if Diamonds are not the right cards to be using, what would be. I downloaded a *.txt file on OS/2 video cards, but it was mainly concerned w/chip and not really cards specific. Right now, we have 1 486/66 w/16 megs of ram and 1 38bdx/33 w/8 megs of ram, and are going to upgrade a 386sx to a 486/66 probably w/8 or 16 (hopefully) megs of ram. CP> Why should we abandon Windoze [to switch to OS/2 (things like speed, memory protection, ease of use for students) What you are abandoning is DOS. Since your boss is unlikely to want to change *everything*, you will probably continue to use many of the applications that you have now. OS/2 gives you the ability to run (and multitask, if you want) DOS, and Windows, and OS/2 applications, all at the same time. It provides very flexible methods to tailor sessions to the memory and driver requirements of each application (no more having to reboot to load a different set of drivers). In addition, applications can be isolated from one another, so that one misbehaving app doesn't force you to shut down. The WorkPlace Shell (WPS) in OS/2 makes file & directory management a dream - you can drag & drop stuff wherever you need to. Programs can be started by dropping the data file on them (e.g., editors). Note that this additional power can be a problem if you have people who are liable (whether from ignorance or whatever) to trash the system. But if you are using Macs & Windows, you must have cleared your security hurdles already. CP> I realize this is small time... *NO* potential OS/2 user is "small time". Team OS/2's mission is to provide the word-of-mouth support to encourage people (and organizations) to make the switch to the best multitasking OS on the market. CP> How does one get into Team OS/2? Said Bill Gates, Microsoft CEO, "We feel that consumers are confused by the great variety of vehicles out there. Every company offers its own proprietary version of your basic sedan, but there's no standard, and we intend to change that." Microsoft aims to define that standard with their new Redmond(TM) sedan. The company claims that given the advanced set of state-of-the-art features in the new model, the Redmond sedan could be the best vehicle available in a short period of time. The Redmond features include: 1. Room for up to six passengers, although the current version only allows one occupant while the car is in motion. Microsoft claims that this will provide greater security for the passenger and vows to introduce a true multi-passenger model in Q3. 2. Integrated car phone. The "Redmond" includes a Sony(TM) model TCP-93. This model only allows dialing out, so another phone is required if you wish to receive calls or communicate with other satisfied "Redmond" owners. Microsoft expects that many third-party vendors will be glad to provide this added value. 3. Revolutionary cache strategy allowed Microsoft to design the "Redmond" with just 3 wheels instead of four. Microsoft predicts tremendous savings in tire replacement. 4. No speedometer, odometer, or gas gauge. Microsoft stated that it can deliver a higher-quality product by leaving off these frills in the initial offering. Industry analysts suggest this could also provide jobs for an enterprising third party marketer. An early prototype of the "Redmond" (code-named "Pong") had an obvious disadvantage of only supporting left turns. The production-ready "Redmond" instead offers revolutionary control preserving but control-insensitive steering. The steering column and directional signals allow you to turn in either direction, and while the car "remembers" the direction you turned, it translates this into a left turn automatically. "This is great news for people who always confuse left and right. And, Microsoft also provides a complimentary map of your own town to aid you in finding paths that only include left turns." explained Gates. For the more conservative driver, Microsoft has dazzled industry critics by providing an AmeriDrive(TM) console. This console currently supports the only available standards document (1.7b), and some minor features such as acceleration, steering, and brakes are not fully supported. Microsoft fully stands behind the AmeriDrive and maintains that it is "not just a check-box" item for compatibility's sake. The "Redmond" will go into a wide public beta program next month, "to make sure that we've got the safest, most tested car ever to hit the market.", according to Microsoft officials. The product will be available to the general public in Q2. ═══ 1.10.2. new Distribution for NT? ═══ New Distribution for NT? Within 60 days you will receive a letter containing a list of names and addresses, along with instructions to write 10 lines of C code and send them to the address at the top of the list before you add your name at the bottom and mail copies to 84 of your friends. Having done that you will simply sit back and wait a few weeks to receive 12.5 million lines of NT source code, which you will then compile and link to form your NT system. DO NOT break the chain. Microsoft has spent billions figuring out what to do to people who break the chain. One beta tester forgot to mail his source code, and within ten days his system was attacked by a virus and then destroyed by a power surge. A woman told her friend not to respond to the pre-release letter, and within hours she fell into a hole and was devoured by poisonous NT bugs! Another man sent the letter back to Microsoft, and within weeks he began hallucinating and ended up in a mental hospital, endlessly repeating the word "downsizing". Don't tell anyone that you heard this from me. ═══ 1.10.3. Spell Check The Config.sys? ═══ Spell Check The Config.sys?!? From: Toby Bell Subj: OS/2 CONFIG.SYS Conference: Fidonet Teamos2 Origin: Frog Hollow Port Moody BC (604) 469-0264 (1:153/290) When You Have A Boring Saturday Night...? Since OS/2's CONFIG.SYS file is so cryptic and difficult to understand, I've found that a quick run through with a spell and grammar checker really improves the overall readability of this long and involved file. With a little time and effort you can tweak it into a really fine piece of prose with the odd rhyme thrown in for good measure. Now if I could just find out what all those error messages on boot up mean. . . . . . . . . (Editor's Note: You do know that this article was written tongue-in-cheek, don't you? In other words, it's only meant to provide some humor.) ═══ 1.11. REXX Workshop ═══ Add Folder To Popup Menu Bitmap Razzle Dazzle Using REXX ═══ 1.11.1. Add Folder To Pop-Up Menu ═══ Use REXX To Add A Folder To The Desktop Popup Menu From: Melissa Woo Conf: NetMail From: 1:233/4.100 (Submitted by author) For once, I've got a SHORT :-) tip to pass on, that I sort of already posted in OS2: To add a folder to the desktop popup menu (requires REXX)- 1. Create the following REXX file: /* folder.cmd -- opens the specified folder */ call RxFuncAdd "SysSetObjectData", "RexxUtil", "SysSetObjectData" folder = "c:\desktop\os!2 system" call SysSetObjectData folder, "OPEN=DEFAULT"; exit /* end of folder.cmd */ 2. Substitute the path of the folder you want to open for the one contained in line 3 of the REXX script above ([c:\desktop\os!2 desktop] is an example only). 3. Open the Templates folder, use the RMB to drag a copy of the Program template to wherever you want. 4. In the Settings notebook, Program page, enter \folder.cmd under "Path and file name," where is the correct drive and path to folder.cmd. 5. Enter whatever name you want on the General page of the Settings notebook; check "Start minimized" on the Sessions page. 6. Close Settings notebook. 7. Open Settings notebook for the desktop; add the new open folder object to the Menu page (if using OS/2 2.1, the object can be dragged and dropped onto the menu page to add it). You should now be able to open your folder from the desktop's popup menu! Editor's Note: Yes, this works nicely - check out the "OS/2 Programs" on the following graphic. That's my folder for OS/2 applications! And I even figured out how to capture the desktop popup menu. ═══ 1.11.2. BBS Introduction ═══ This listing is for the BBS junkie in you who needs to have a phone bill treat once in a while . Or bored to death while you're travelling. Our listing is based on a rather extensive listing put together by Dave Fisher of OS/2 type Bulletin Boards. Space limits this month prevent us from listing all the details he has for each BBS, but we've tried to include a couple from every state in the US (Notice and hint to you sysops...not all states are represented.) and a few foreign countries, too. Dave Fisher's list is a compilation of OS/2 BBS's across the world. If you wish to make an addition or correction to his list, he's asked that you please netmail your BBS information to Dave Fisher at LiveNet, 1:170/110@fidonet.org. For the newsletter, I've sorted the in alphabetical order by Country for the international ones and by state for those in the USA to make it easier to find one close to you. His file has other details related to these BBS's but we didn't have room, okay? The file we're using showed that the last update was September 7, 1992. Does anyone know if this list of his is being kept up to date? I hope to expand it more next month; ran out of time. But I've got his list in a database right now and I'll be able to code that list a lot easier next month. Hope you find this inclusion useful. Large phone bills are not my fault...!!! ═══ 1.12.2.
