BLEEDING, Internal


CAUSES

     Internal bleeding can occur after a direct blow or crushing injury to the
chest, abdomen, or torso.


SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

  -  bright red blood coughed up
  -  bright or dark red blood in vomit
  -  vomit that looks like coffee grounds
  -  bright red blood or dark tar-like substance in feces


EMERGENCY TREATMENT

1. Check breathing.  If breathing stops, see MOUTH-TO-MOUTH RESUSCITATION
   (previous section).
2. SEEK MEDICAL ASSISTANCE IMMEDIATELY.  Call 911 or operator.

Until Ambulance Arrives:

3. Keep child lying down on his or her side, and cover lightly with blanket.
4. Observe for shock.  See SHOCK (later section).
5. DO NOT give child anything to eat or drink.
