How to: Select specific subject areas

The Themes button enables you to narrow down your display to specific subject areas within all books, with the exception of The Hutchinson Concise Chronology of World History and The Helicon Book of Days, which are sorted chronologically. These are:

• General History (historians, general historic terms)
• Ancient History (includes archaeology but not mythology)
• Medieval History (from 476 to 1500; not Britain)
• Modern European History (from 1500; includes Russia and Turkey)
• British and Commonwealth History (from the end of the Romans; includes Ireland, Australia, Canada, New Zealand)
• United States History
• Latin American History (including Caribbean)
• African History
• Middle Eastern History (includes Israel, Arab World)
• Oriental History (includes ancient and modern India, China, Japan)
• Military History and Warfare (includes disarmament, summits, treaties since 1945, regions at war; wars since 1914 only)
• Archaeology
• Exploration
• Royalty and Aristocracy (people and places with royal associations, monarchs)

You can select one or more of these themes to filter the subject areas you wish to see displayed.

To select themes, click on the Themes button on the HHRS menu bar. The Select Subject screen appears. Select the subject areas you wish to see by checking or unchecking the relevant boxes, then click on OK.

When the theme filter is selected, the pattern on the Themes button changes, to remind you that the contents list will only display articles in the subject areas you have chosen. If on selecting a particular set of themes and carrying out a search you do not find the expected results, try selecting additional themes, or revert to listing all subject areas, by clicking on All, then on OK.
